Hi everyone, I recently found this quarter and believe it is a minor off-center strike since both sides of the coin are off. Decided to post it here for confirmation. If it is, it will be the first one I have found. Unfortunately there is some PMD action going on with the first 9 in the date. As always, thanks for the help and I apologize for the lighting in the pics.
Thanks so much for the info, really appreciate it! "Definition: A broadstrike is a coin that is struck out-of-collar and in which the design is complete on both faces. Most broadstrikes expand in the horizontal plane, but some will show cupping. Cupping can affect the entire perimeter of the coin or only part of the perimeter. Cupping is almost always toward the hammer die." I was just reading up on some of this on error-ref.com and saw this definition. So this combination is possible due to the MAD obverse? The "design is complete on both faces," doesn't apply here because of the MAD partially cut off date on the obverse right? I'm just trying to learn some of this and trying to make sure I understand it correctly. Thanks!
Thanks so much for the input steve.e! I just now got around to researching this more and trying to learn about uncentered broadstrikes on error-ref.com and according to their definition my coin doesn't qualify http://www.error-ref.com/?s=uncentered+broadstrike Broadstrike: Uncentered Definition: When a planchet is poorly centered and then struck out of collar, it ends up as either an off-center strike or an uncentered broadstrike. To qualify as an uncentered broadstrike, the design must be fully present on both faces. If the design is cut off at the edge on one or both faces, it is an off-center strike. I guess because the bottom of the numbers on the date are cut off it is just considered an off-center strike. I'm not really sure why this is the case, but I definitely learned a lot reading up on this, appreciate it!
When I see coins like this, I wonder what damage was done to the dies and the collar. Would the press just keep cranking out coins with the same error or would the press be stopped, fixed and the dies replaced. Probably stuff the mint won't talk about.
