The latest in the ongoing story of the money found in the wall of an old house is in this article: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2008/02/woman_whose_contractor_found_c.html

Now several heirs to the original owner of the house (and money) have filed claims in court for their share of the money. It may be for naught as the current owner claims she has spent most of it.

I doubt the money has been spent, but in order to substantiate her story, I hope she spent at least 10% of it at face value in order to generate witnesses and news stories about cashiers and bankers getting Depression Era bank notes at face value.

$180,000 is a tough amount to spend. Anyone ever see Brewster's Millions and the other half dozen movies with the same plot?

What a shame, the things that greed makes people do. Last year $100k was found in the attic of a Sanford FL home and the new homeowner actually called the authorities, saying he felt it was the right thing to do. I'm not sure what became of the case but I think the family of the previous owner got to keep the money and gave the new homeowner a finders fee.
I know it must have been tempting to keep the money but think about your familys safety...you never know who may come looking for that money!

I remember that story. He called the police because four years prior someone was murdered in the house. The wife of the man who was murdered there, the previous owner, was fighting for the cash. That was September last year. Not sure what happened either.

Some of the comments after the article were interesting. (Some were just irrelevant.)

What I found most appropriate: "What if [the contractor] found asbestos packed in the walls ?"
