    Given that the mintages for 2016 and 2015 are nearly identical - can someone explain why the 2016 prices are so much higher - other than some sort of irrational aberration?

    Probably for the same reason that my auto insurance and cable tv rates increase every year...…….greed!

    If you are taking about buying from the Mint, You might be seeing the shipping charge added until the next few orders. It is free to continued members after the first four orders in the new year.

    Greedy sellers and a pool of people silly enough to pay the prices (but then the whole hobby is subjective to a point).

    No, irrational aberration is the reason. Seems to happen a lot with modern proofs.
