What does everyone think is a fair price percentage for selling to a friend here on CoinTalk ? I've often thought of posting in the Open Forum, but never wanted to insult anyone with a price they might find too high. Let's say a Morgan is worth $100 market value in completed eBay listings, how much does everyone think you should charge a friend here on the boards ?
For me it would be $50.00, everyone else. $125 : ) Actually, put whatever you feel comfortable with. I will either bite or pass personally. As a side note, I have purchased from several people here in CT and honestly would pay more for something here than say ebay because of the comfort level and the fact that there is a TRUE way to resolve an issue should one arise. Its been tested and confirmed by the jury here. Case Ben vs. Nathans.
If I am selling a coin I don't need or want, or an easily replaced coin, I usaully will sell a coin to a friend for what I bought it for. But this is only if I can afford to.
it really depends sometimes if a coin has excellent eye appeal i will buy a coin for 50-200 dollars more then greysheet also i agree about what Jim says that you would pay more for a coin that you could trust was real/not cleaned/as described
Many other sellers consider their cost when selling, too. However, depending upon the circumstances, offering coins on that basis could lead to a price that is way too high, or even way too low. It's always a good idea to check current market values/prices, even when selling to friends.
I think you should determine what you think it is worth - people will purchase it or pass. Personally I would check ebay, heritage and maybe a few dealers I respect. Then set a fair price. If I think it is too high I will pass. And no I would not buy from just anyone posting in the open forum. But yes if I thought it was a fair price I might purchase something.
Right there is a problem. It used to be that you could almost trust ebay realized prices. I used to use them myself. But in the past 2 or 3 years ebay has become so crazy with people that have no idea at all what they are buying, paying outrageous prices for coins worth a fraction of what they paid - that you can't use ebay realized prices as a benchmark anymore. They are just too off the wall. Now change your scenario to an actual market value - then you have a workable idea.
Where might I find that reference ? Certainly not from the adds in CoinWorld. Most dealers seem to mark their prices from the RedBook, so they're worthless. The Greysheet seems to be off a lot of times. What's a guy to do ? This is the reason I think that many people do not utilize the Open Forum.
Oh I dunno - we average about 2 new posts a day there. The secret to selling coins is simple - offer something people want to buy for a fair price and presto - it's gone !
I do check Heritage for coins over $100. Lower end coins, I usually look at the bay. Now, on Heritage prices, should I consider the real price to be 15% more than the sale price ? People have mentioned here that they take that buyers fee into mind when bidding. On most coins that wouldn't make a lot of difference, but getting into the higher side it would.
Good point Roto and you DO have to add the "friends" part. Last thing I want to do is have someone that I have gotten to know buy a coin from me and be unhappy with it. Hasn't happened but still can make you leery. I've sold some coins to CT members on Coinbug fairly recently and it worked out well. You might try there as it's free but not fast unless someone wants it now. The site is small but growing. As you know I've put a few notes on CT but basically at face plus shipping. Others I wanted a premium with no bites. I look at it this way. If it's a scarcer note I expect a premium. Friend or not. Yes, I probably got it at face but also went through literally MILLIONS to find it. With coins most of us buy them and if we get a good deal on a dupe want to turn it over for a modest profit. When I go to shows in search of a coin or coins I generally look for a price between bid/ask and retail. I know the seller has time and money invested in it. Perhaps an approach like that would help as well. clembo
Thank you VERY much ! I did NOT know that. Some good points there, Clembo. I think I will just start throwing some things up and see if anyone cusses me. LOL
Not to be given ya hard time, but then you need to look at little closer at what you are reading. They will say something like this - Sold for: $149.50 (includes BP)
You're right. I was just looking at the $$$$. Also, I just started looking there a week before they changed the format. I got a little mixed up for a while, with the change.
