Taking a cue from greyfang who proposed this method for Lincoln cent collections, I came up with a nice solution for storing Presidential Dollars in Dansco albums. I wanted to keep the coins in AirTites to keep them from toning and also so the edges could be seen. The direct-fit AirTites for presidential dollars are the same series (Series A) as the small cent holders. Therefore, they have the same outside diameter. They fit perfectly in Dansco half-dollar pages. The blank pages have 20 holes per page, which is perfect for storing a complete set of Satin Finish and Business Strikes from both mints and the proofs. (see photo) The only problem is labeling. I tried using clear laserprint labels but the outlines of the labels show even though they are clear and it doesn't look very clean. It's also very difficult to line them up exactly right with each other. Is anyone aware of a better method for labeling these pages? Does anyone know what Dansco intended users to do with blank pages? It would be nice if Dansco made pages for this purpose.
Nice hack. Possible solution for labeling would be Whitman's New Date Transfer Sheets. Though the text color seems to be pretty damn similar to that of the Dansco album pages. Go to your local hobby store and browse the scrapbooking section for "rub-ons". They'd be about the same price and in a variety of colors/fonts.
Great looking display. You did really good on the labels. It's tough getting everything straight. I gave up on trying to do this and just went with a chart page I could do on the PC.
dreamer, You might send a picture to the Dansco folks and a request that they to produce the blank Half Dollar pages labelled for Presidential Dollars so that they can be used to store the Series in air-tights! Who knows, they might like your idea and go with it. Of course, the prices of the pages will probably go up but you will at least save on having to label them yourself. Frank
Edges... How well can the coin edge be seen? Both in regards to your mounting as well as just placing them in the AirTites?
In the AirTites, the edge can be seen clearly all the way around. (I'll try to post a picture) In the album, the page hides some of it. However, if you position the holder so it is flush with the back of the page, it sticks up enough in the front to see that there is edge lettering, but you can't really read it However, you can easily pop the holders out to check the mint mark.
Beautiful job and good idea. I haven't got as far as putting mine in albums yet but I think I have just found a good method. Is there any Whitman equivalent you can think of? Thanks for sharing your idea!
Thanks, but greyfang gets credit for the original idea. I just realized that the small dollar direct-fit AirTites were the same size. I don't know anything about Whitman folders. greyfang said he tried several different types of half-dollar albums and Dansco was the best fit. The ideal thing would be AirTite pages in the same size as the Dansco pages without the pockets for the slides. I wonder if AirTite or Dansco could be persuaded to make them. I learn a lot here. I want to contribute something in return when I can. I agree it's one of the things that makes it a great forum.
They seem to be a favorite in terms of protecting coins. For me the biggest drawback was the lack of good solutions for storing and displaying the capsules. The ability to put them in albums is a big benefit for me.
I inquired at Dansco; actually got to speak to the owner of the company! They will print custom pages, and better yet, they can produce them with the top sheet glued flat to the cardboard, which would eliminate the buckling that occurs when you put AirTites into the regular album pages. The total cost would be only $3.00 per page; much less than retail. The only problem is that the minimum order for custom jobs is 500 pages. So, I'd like to know how many people here would be interested in participating. It would make sense to have the first 5 years' worth made up at once because it would be easier to distribute them in batches, rather than one page each year. If we have 100 people who want 5 sets of 5 each, that would be $75 each, 50 people wanting 10 sets each, $150, etc. Of course, you could sell any extras. I've attached 2 alternate mockups of what they might look like, but anything on the page could be modified. Please let me know by PM if you are interested in pursuing this further.
Nice job. You obviously took a lot of time to think this out. Maybe Dansco will produce a series of albums that will accommodate airtight holders with coins. Good work. Bruce
I was hoping they might do that. The guy I talked to didn't seem to pick up on my suggestion. He just told me how to get the custom printing done. It seems like the ideal way to put the coins in albums because they're protected really well, but it's easy to take them out and see them.
Thanks! That's a good thought. There are lots of dealers that sell 12 coin sets (proofs plus the 8 satin finish coins) The Cable Shopping Network sells the 20-coin sets, but they want $99.00. You could put together 3 sets for just a couple of dollars more. Of course, you wouldn't get the giant wooden box.
The mock-ups look really good, dreamer. I'd like to see some variety pages for an album. Maybe they exist and I'm just not finding them. Not really for presidential dollars but Jefferson, Lincoln, etc. Well get your pages printed out, see how much for a the pleather album cover with custom printing (Presidential Dollars Air-Tite Edition) and open a shop online Will exclusive Dansco albums you wouldn't have to worry about competition at least for a few months.
I used this idea today and it's GREAT! I had some proofs in Airtites and then in 2x2's and I hated the system. Luckily I had a spare 50 cent Dansco page and a blank Dansco alblum. I put the airtites in the page and it looks super! I really don't care about labeling, since I pretty much know what they are. Just as an FYI, I put my SAC Proofs and some of my Washingtons, Roosy's and Jeffy's. It's AWESOME. It's so easy to look at them and admire them now.
This page looks great. dreamer94 How did you make the labels? Would it be possible to share a web address and product number to obtain the half dollar pages and the book it fits in?
