I am following this one to learn. I am wanting to know what makes the experienced guys think this one has been cleaned. I don’t see rub marks that give away a harsh cleaning and I believe I detect mint luster in the photos. If I were shopping this Morgan I wouldn’t have suspected a cleaning. What’s the give away?
looks off to me, might just be a little wear making it look off but I think it's probably cleaned. Definitely can't see this in a straight graded MS holder, maybe an AU55-58
Randy, on this one, its the texture of the fields, especially on the obverse. There are two big areas that concern me - the first is the field behind her head, near UNUM. It looks wrong, especially in context with the surrounding areas. It may just be wear - but I really don't see enough wear on the high points to give this look in the field. The second area is her cheek and the fields in front of her face. The pictures are just out of focus enough to make figuring out what's going on here difficult, but it looks wrong. There may be hairlines, or the fields may be altered in some way - but it does not look right. There does appear to be plenty of luster on the coin, especially the reverse - but that's what you would expect from an AU coin. The problem is that not all of the fields have the same luster - there are clear disruptions that just shouldn't be there.
Different methods will affect the luster differently. There is not a one-size-fits-all definite answer for every coin that addresses every cleaning method. Generally, cleaning will disturb the luster - and that is exactly what I see here in these pictures.
Uncirculated Details - Cleaned. Stupid autocorrect won't let me write the 3-letter abbreviation. It turns it to Uno!
It looks to me as if a light cleaning occurred some time ago and the coin is starting to retone with a light bluish to purple color. It could also be the lighting.
