I refreshed the vcoins newly posted items page and this one popped up so I bought it. This one is my third Otho denarius. This one will join my 12 Caesars collection. I know it has condition problems, but I will happily allow a worn coin into my collection. Please post your coins of Otho or coins that just happened to fall into your shopping cart. Otho.AD 69. AR Denarius (19mm, 3 g 6h). Rome mint. Obv: Bare head right IMP M OTHO CAESAR AVG TR P Rev: Pax standing left, holding olive branch and caduceus. PAX ORBIS TERRARVM RIC I 4; RSC 3. Good Fine. toned Here are my other two Otho denarii.
Nice @Orfew ! I enjoy a coin with nice wear. I keep wondering... are there ANY coins of Otho WITHOUT his wig? IE billiard ball bald?
His Provincials from Alexanria and Antioch (below) have hair added but not in such a way that we laugh at them as with the denarii. Of course that is part of why they are cheaper than denarii. People like the wigs. There are no baldies. Romans seemed more sensitive about that than other forms of appearance. I wonder if Julius Caesar had been hairy, would all the succeeding Roman rulers have worn laurel wreaths or would it have fallen out of fashion sooner or later. There are a few emperors that issued a few bare head coins but I have never known anyone who specialized in collecting them.
Agreed. I have an Alexandrian issue. Just wondered if there were any non-wig issues... they were so poorly depicted on a coin. Curious how bad his wig looked face to face. Vespasian was a cool guy. Bald did not bother him... Otho, AD 69. Billon AR Tetradrachm, 23mm, 11.9gms; Year 1; Egypt-Alexandria. Obv.:AVTOK MAΓ OΘΩNOΣ KAIΣ ΣEB; Laureate head right, L A in right field Rev: RΩ-MA; Helmeted, cuirassed bust of Roma right. Emmet 186
I'm thinking of Gordian I and II. Gordian II had a receding hairline which is very evident on his sestertii.
