Short and brief. Coin has a few miles on it. Striking on the rim and everything else seems to be solid with no visible damage as to why my "In" in "IGWT isn't there. Took random angles, light from different angles. I have some BDC's (Beat Down Coins) and RRC's (RailRoad Coins).. Trademark those if they haven't been taken yet. However the missing "In" is nothing like I've seen on any of my BDC's, RRC's or PMD coins. I know the knowledgeable folks on here have an answer for me. Appreciate it CT Crew.
Hagen, I think some one might call it a " grease filled " die, meaning that those two letters were accidentally filled with grease just before striking the coin. Because of the grease filled letters, the metal of the planchet could not go up into the die and form those two letters. Now that's what I've heard explained , if I remember it correctly, by more experienced members. When one of them looks this over, especially Paddyman or Fred Weinberg, they will be able to give you a more definitive answer. It could just be wear on those two letters, but the rest of the coin does not show any kind of wear like that. I've got my fingers crossed for you Hagen, hoping you've got something good.
Grease filled Die is correct. Compacted grease in the letters I and N on the Die did not allow the word IN to form properly.
@Hookman throws it out, @paddyman98 puts the stamp on it. Time to keep it moving. Appreciate it fellas.
I'll take a stab at it. No, not in the Numismatic eye but in the eye of the beholder. Common occurrence, you'll see a lot of this in the "S" of states and I'm sure many others. Wish it was, I believe the Mint man was on his union break (no offense the Union, I'm on my break as well) and didn't keep an eye on his die. Keep the grease out of the die! It fools the untrained eye, such as myself until these gentlemen taught me what causes this.
Copied, pasted and slightly edited some responses to me from a few of you guys, threw in a little of my own lingo to make it sound like I knew and made it happen. Bam! Lol.. Thanks @Collecting Nut @paddyman98 and the The Real @Hookman!!
Appreciate it Gents, I was unaware of "floating roof" variety, good to know. I've seen a few of them, I'll remember they were in one of my 60's and 70's boxes. This one I just pulled is a 69. Looks like a Floating Roof to me. Anything else that this in-training Eye is missing on this one? Thank you!
