Coin #3 of 2019: Roman Republican Denarius 89 BC (Trigger Warning for snowflakes)

I received this coin in the mail from CNG this week. It is a Denarius from the Roman Republic dating to 89 BC. According to Roman mythology early Rome was populated mostly by men, in order to maintain the population Romulus, Rome's founder and first king, lead a plot to kidnap women from the nearby Sabine tribe. The scene on the reverse of this coin, showing a pair of Roman men carrying a pair abducted of Sabine women. This event, which was known as the "Rape of The Sabine Women" was a popular theme in Renaissance art.

That is an interesting reverse. I still have yet to get a silver RR coin but the few you've shown have moved getting one to the top of my list for sure. -d

I would really like to have all the reverse types for Sabinus.

 

I really like that nicely centered reverse. Mine is the version with the palm but the flan barely shows it.


My fourree adds APV on the obverse.


The other popular Sabinus coin is the Tarpeia and shields reverse.


There is much less demand for his biga type even if it does have a boat in exergue.

 

How could I not click on that clickbait title.

 

I have to be honest, it was the interestingly off center obverse that made me want this one.
