Even though I haven't collected for long I have found a fondness for Quinarii. These small Republican coins when found in higher grades are just a joy and a marvels to see and hold in hand. Today I'm sharing one of the finest known specimens of a Quinarius minted to help finance the efforts during the Social War. Most of you will probably be more familiar with this moneyer's denarius issue, but I find this one just a tad bit more artistic and beautiful, even though I love the high relief busts on the denarii. I also went so far as to purchasing the 1986 Sternberg catalogue the coin was included in, no regrets there as the RR section of the sale was mind blowing. L. Piso Frugi. 90 BC. AR Quinarius (14 mm, 2.16 g). Rome mint. Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo right, club behind. Reverse: Victory advancing right, holding wreath and palm-branch, L PI - SO across fields, FRVGI in exergue. Reference: Crawford 340/2e Provenance: Naville Numismatics, Auction 42 (22 July 2018), lot 422. Ex Sternberg Auction 18 (20 November 1986), lot 323.
I am sure this should be in the ancient section. Cool coin. You can ask the mods for it to be moved if you want. Or I will if that is what you wish.
Yes. Was a bit tired when posting and didn't put it in the right forum. I've reported it so hopefully it will be moved to ancients as soon as a mod sees it.
It's a beauty!! I grabbed an inexpensive example last year, in part because I didn't have an example of a quinarius.
It's a nice specimen you have there TIF. These little ones are so hard to find in higher grades. My first was a very worn one of Galba
A coin like that has me nit picking the details that are missing. A coin like mine has me grateful for the few details that you can see! Jk. That, my friend, is a beautiful show stopper right there. Ps, I LOVE quinarii!
Here is one of my favourites-Cato the Younger. It also has an interesting provenance. M. Porcius Cato. Quinarius Africa 47-46, AR ( 13.5mm., 1.94g).
