Just starting my Lincoln Center adventure, and upon going through the piggy bank, I've come across 2 that seem to have more of a lip than the others. Is this a worthy error or am I seeing things?
i have a few like that, what i have seen on this site is that they are more than likely a misaligned die. im not an expert, but that is my assumption
First, welcome to the neighborhood! It's usually a good idea to post, both, obverse and reverse photos of coins like this because it's possible that they could also be an off-center strike. If the reverse is off-set by the same distance in the same position, then it is an off-center strike. If the reverse is normal, then it is a misaligned die strike. I'm assuming that this is a misaligned die strike because it is much more common. Chris
Wow, thanks for replies. I've attached the reverse for the 72 and 82, respectively. The normalness of these sides and flawed rim on the obverse would mean misaligned die strike, correct? Also, since these aren't rare errors, would including these in a collectors book be a better idea than the normal versions?
Since these are classified as errors, you might want to keep them in a separate album and build this album as a separate collection. They're not really worth much, but that is your choice. Trust me! You will find a whole lot more of this same anomaly (misaligned die) in other years and mintmarks. Chris
Can't wait haha, I might do that separate "minor mint error" album. It's not really costing much more than time anyways
One way to look at it is "Did it turn out as intended?" If not, then it's an error. The more common the error, the less desirable it becomes. Yes these are errors, but extremely common at that.
Nicely put. I figure someone down the line will appreciate a mint error album, regardless how common error.
Thank you Sir and understood. I'm happy to pull anything that looks 'off' though. For example (and I have referenced this one prior), 1958 DDO that until recently wasn't "discovered". It existed all along yet it took someone to highlight it publicly for it to become acknowledged. I have oodles of 50's wheat cents and I will go through them all eventually. I suspect more undiscovered varieties exist and so I'll hang on to all of my oddities.
Hello new here but i have a no mint mark 1944 wheat penny that is obviously off c center strike. Is if worth anything and who is interested?
First, welcome to the neighborhood! It is best that you start your own thread and provide clear photos. Also, CT has rules about solicitations and specific forums for Buy/Sell/Trade activities. I suggest you read those rules.
