I agree with your point that it's worth the time. I'm terrible at pinpointing mainly. I wind up digging either holes way too big or too deep or give up on the hole entirely. I live in and around very irony land so I guess that's part of it too. Kudos to your patient attitude. I have little of it these days. Oh and yeah, I'm totally jealous of Paddyman and his finds. I'm really good at finding buried trash though so I guess that's something?
Actually, I like when the weather is poor. It's good if the ground is slightly wet. Easier to dig, and it creates a halo effect around the targets.
I was thinking of heading out today,it's a little chilly and there's a slight drizzle, but it's not too bad. And yes the ground is better to dig when it's damp like this. Yep, I'm goin out lol. Post some pics later.
The targets have a halo effect when there is water in the ground. So you get good hits without being right on top of them. I use good batteries anyway (and I recharge them) but once they aren't loud anymore, they are fried. The battery charger has been AMAZING. I paid $12 and I was skeptical. Instead of them getting used up after 4 hours (9 volts are expensive) I juice them up after every hunt and generally get 50,60, 70 hours out of them. So that's a must.
I couldn't go last week cause of the weather. I wasn't sure about today but I headed out. Had a problem, (and a long boring story) but it worked out. 1st hunt of 2019.
Just got done watching a youtube video where these guys found half a dozen 5,10 and 20 dollar gold pieces, bunch of seated half and full seated dollars. Now, I want to go hunt the family land. Problem is the land is so iron rich, it deters me and I quit fairly quickly.
I happen to be a fellow that has no problem laughing at his own misfortune.... So I’ll share this bit of humor. I detected as a young man before I was married. I did not have a pinpointer back then. Santa brought me a detector and a pinpointer. Been out three times since Christmas. Started to get miffed with my pinpointer. It squeeled at every handful of dirt I tried....... Yep, it was my wedding band. That realization was quite the “duuhhh” moment.
I have seen some of those videos and I believe they are staged and not real. Guy pulls out a gold coin that has been buried for 100 years. In an area that rains a lot (makes it go deeper). I realize gold doesn't tarnish very much and will shine up quickly and easily, but when he pulled this out of the ground, it looked like it was minted yesterday, which didn't seem logical. "Oh my hands are shaking." I didn't believe it, and they cursed me out. I deleted the post, because it's not worth it to get into it with them. I have seen some videos that seem real. But some of the outrageous ones I think you have to take with a grain of salt. People will find gold coins. A few in a lifetime of searching.
Yeah, I thought that myself for a bit but there's another whether they rented a backhoe and were literally pulling out half dollars left and right. I know that one wasn't staged. This one with the gold pieces though, who knows. Seemed real enough.
I have titanium in my leg so I have to not get to close to it while detecting. Maybe I keep detecting my leg. Who knows. I just know it sucks only finding junk repeatedly.
It's supposed to rain and snow all day Sunday. So I scrounged this up today. Lower gas costs helped a little.
I'm curious. I only use a Eurotek Pro with the 11" DD coil. Anyone else have success with this or ever used it?
It's snowing like crazy here and that really sucks because this was the only day I could go out. Has anyone tried to go around any storage buildings? There's a big one by my house and there's always people out there cleaning out units. But I just thought about all the nuts and bolts lol. I might try anyway just to see, maybe tomorrow. Happy Hunting all!
I think you are going to hit a lot of trash. (Storage buildings.) You could hit a diamond in the rough. The detector works in the snow, it just depends if it's not too deep and if the kneeling and digging is not that horrible.
Will, my hunch paid off. Not only did I hit a 126 penny spill, I pulled that diamond you were talking about. A broken silver bracelet! It's missing 2 links but I'll take it anyway. When I went to ask the guy if I could dig on his property he said fine but you probably won't find much. I find out he metal detects also and informed me that this land was filled in with trash, and we all know how that goes. I'm looking around and I see that one side of the building is a different color. Is that an add-on I ask. He says yes, I put that on about three years ago. So this side was put on after the fill in. There were 3 small units facing the street with a gravel parking lot and small piece of grass. I wasn't even going to dig anything but I turned on my rig and just started walking slow with my machine just stuck out in a straight line. I was walking to leave and it rang out, right beside the concrete step leading into the building. My machine was going crazy like a multiple Target so I bent down and stuck my tool in and 3 coins popped out. I ran it again same thing. I grabbed my shovel stuck it in and probably 15 more come up lol. Whats crazy is they were all only about an inch down. Sorry for going on but I'm really excited about this one. The bracelet was on the side I started at,if not for the spill I would never have stayed to look for anything else. When I got finished I went to show the owner what I found and he was flabbergasted lol. He said in a million years I would have never went over there and detected that, I said me either I was leaving and it just happened. This just proves you never know where that next score is going to be. Happy Hunting guys! Enjoy...
Nice bracelet. Yes at the storage someone just threw out a jar of pennies. I think the most I have ever found is 97. But I usually have around 40 or so every time out. I am at almost 9500.
Thanks Mike, I've been using an app that lets you overlay new maps over old maps from any location. I've found a real old house in the woods that's not there anymore, but was there in 1907. Can you give me any pointers for a hunt like this? I'd like to be as prepared as possible.
This is a cool app that lets you overlay old maps over Google maps,to locate old towns or find old houses not there anymore.
