I've been a part-time collector for over 30 years now. I found my first wheat penny in change when I was 7-8 y.o. and it was the beginning of a life long interest. I've loved the hobby ever since. I've hoarded everything I've ever been given (which is quite substantial). Recently I was going through my box of duplicates in an effort to clean it up and prepare a starter collection for my son. I ended up with many, many coins that just didn't need to be there. What to do with them? I've been hearing for some time now that no one really finds anything interesting in change anymore. That's ashame, as that's how I got started in the hobby. So I took a whole roll of 1943 steel cents and a roll of pre-39 wheaties and distributed them in various change machines etc... I have no idea what will become of these coins, but if just one of them is found by some kid in his change, and a new collector is born, then as far as I'm concerned, it was worth it. I guess it's like sowing seeds of interest. It was, in my small way, a way of giving back to a hobby that has given so much to me for so long. So my question is, what have others done to give back to the hobby? I look forward to reading any stories others may leave here. Thanks...

I found a wheat cent in circulation and that is what got me started. latly people here on coin talk have been giving me stuff simply because they are nice. I recently taught my son's wolf scout den, about 12 boys, about the minting process and about different coins, US, world, and ancient. At the end of the night, they all got a bag of random coins, both US, world, and ancient. Nothing spectacular since I don't have anything spectacular myself. But they were over the moon. Hopefully at least one of them will get the itch.
I don't know how long you've been a member, here, but you might consider "gifting" some of your coins to newbies who join this site seeking information about their collections....personally, I would be loathe to gift coins to someone who joins here just to find out what this coin or that coin is worth.... Or, you might create a contest (please observe strict rules of play) wherein the winner(s) receive coins as prizes. If you need help with ideas for a contest, you might get some help by browsing through the Contest Forum to see what others have done. Chris
I'm not sure about today, but, went I was a scout I got merit badges for both coin collecting and stamp collecting.
Oh yes I do. I been collecting close to fifty years. I can count on one hand the coins I have sold. However I have gifted loads of coins. Selling leaves me somewhat hollow. However when I gift a coin I get more enjoyment than I do owning it. Gifted several batches to young enthusiastic members here on CT. When I coached little league ball I would give coins dated 1863 (birth of baseball) to my guys at the end of the season. I have an old car I show and keep a bag of no date Buffalos In the old car and randomly hand them out to youngsters at car shows and cruise ins. Lord yes. I do love to gift a coin to a younger person and see the wonder in their eyes at the history they hold in their hands.
They do. The Cub Scouts also have some coin-related badges. They are actually belt loops for the Wolf cubs.
As a new collector that thinks he finds something ends up to be basically common or not worth anything from opinions,but still worth something to me..love your story here.i think that was really cool and nice what u did expecially if one of your deposits turns someone into a coin hunter/collector
Been a collector for a while and most recently got back in to it full time. I am pretty good at listening and great at speaking in public so what I want to do to give back to the coin community is to start my own website. I want the site to literally give back to the people who are new and starting up all the way to interacting with the legends (maybe some day). I want to start a podcast and link everything to the site. I'm not interested in starting it up to make a living, just adding to my part of the hobby and giving back. It will have a section to sell my things as well (avoiding the ebay fee's when I can. I figure i should take advantage of paying for a web hosting that will allow for a store as well.) Lots of great people here and great advice and I plan to put it to use with my knowledge and abilities!
