They do that in Washington State. They are called floating bridges and they sit on the water. You should see and feel them move when a storm rolls through.

The US Navy had a concrete ship that floated.

 

While in college, we built several concrete canoes for the Society of Civil Engineers competition between colleges. Cool stuff.

 

University of Louisville used to have concrete canoe races. Don't know if they still do.

Racing them is a part of the competition, along with model bridges that get loaded to failure and surveying competitions. Every University that has an active chapter of ASCE is eligible to participate. There are district competitions and national.

 

We civil engineering students constructed and raced concrete canoes among Big Ten colleges in the early 1970’s.
