Now that I've been collecting for an entire 3 months I've become very hesitant to buy coins, more so then when I started. There are so many dealers, ads in Coin World etc., and prices SEEM comparable (or they make it impossible to compare by offering 'their choice of dates' sets, etc.). So, I don't feel like I have a basis for comparison or choice between dealers, and don't want to get ripped off, or give any money at all to less reputable dealers simply out of ignorance. Can you recommend a few reliable US coin dealers... I'm not so worried about a few $ more profit for the dealer, but I really would like to start building a relationship while I'm buying small so that I have someone I can turn to for advice if/when I start buying bigger. Thanks for any advice or references, Mike
Congratulations on learning so quickly that the coin market can be a dangerous place. It isn't just a fun hobby. It's a business filled with predators, but also with a few angels. However, it's going to be difficult to develop a "relationship" with an internet dealer, so you're stuck with the dealers within a reasonable travelling distance from where you live.
Mike, if you let people know what types/grades/price range of coins you are potentially interested in you, will probably get more worthwhile recommendations.
Well for IHC's I have used VTcoins.com(you can request pictures of coins) and Harlan Berk. I have not had a problem with either one. Just my opinion.
Point well taken: IHC: we are looking to fill as many spots as possible a F or above, but are realistic about key dates (read: not going to purchase at this time). So far we've spent as much as $15 on a IHC, and expect to pay more for a few but certainly not triple digits. Peace: The objective is a set at MS60+, shooting for MS63. Again, avoiding key dates and rarities. And: my son has developed a keen sense of 'cool' around Buffalo nickels, so I think that is next, probably within the same parameters as IHC.
