Hello everyone, I have Kennedy Half's that are (copper? or silver?) not really sure but recently came across this Kennedy Half and I thought it was pretty. It's gold looking and was wondering what would make a coin this color? Thanks
There have been websites and shopping channel stores that have offered "gold" plated Kennedy halves (and other coins also) for sale as mementos, collector coins, valuable keepsakes, etc.. This could very well be one of those coins that "got loose" into the normal channels of trade without its "C.O.A" or other explanatory paperwork.
Morning Hookman, Thank you for the information but have to ask what is a C.O.A.? Also what would be the other explanatory paperwork needed? Sorry for asking a silly question but I'm not familiar with Coin language, I buy coins every now and then but not in anyway shape or form knowledgeable about coins. So from your response is this a good coin to keep? Thank you very much!
Plated. I have found 5-6 or 7 of them. Usually not in that nice of shape. I would put it into a 2x2 and keep it.
As CN stated above, a C.O.A. is a Certificate of Authenticity. Depending on the coin you purchase, you might get one of those at the time of purchase. The other " explanatory " paperwork would be some sort of paper insert with the coin purchase, that would explain, perhaps, why it was gold plated, or what event or person is being celebrated. The " got loose " just means that such a plated coin may have gotten separated from its original paperwork and got spent into the normal avenues of trade. When that coin is " discovered " , with out that paperwork, someone may believe they have something special. This actually happens quite often, especially as more and more " marketeers " try to find more and more ways to make a buck. As for keeping it, that would be up to you. It probably has no more than face value (actual value=50 cents), but it could become the basis for your own " Oddities " box. An Oddities box is just a group of odd coins that have just face value( or none at all) that are different in some way that you could Show your friends and Tell them about it. I think we all have some Show and Tell coins that we pull out now and then and say Hey, look at this ! I've also found 4 or 5 over the years. Still have them and will keep them just in case somebody decides they'll pay good money for one. I don't suspect that'll ever happen so I anticipate having them forever.

You can buy these from 3rd party companies all day long. Any year, any quantity, etc. They essentially take a half dollar (or any other coin, and gold plate it). The gold plating is so THIN that it virtually adds nothing to it's value.
