I almost never search for anything in particular, so you can imagine my surprise when I became the proud owner of this key date error. Never did I expect to cherrypick one of these in this condition. This is one of the most famous and desired Chinese coins ever made (I can count on my hands the number of issues from China’s 2600-year numismatic history more famous and desired than this one), so I never thought I would be able to afford a genuine example.
I was buying Christmas presents and I got some things for myself and I got discounts on this and mark downs on that and it all came to a price and I thought it was a little high ... but OK... I thought the 2x2 on this was $5 but when I got it home and checked the register tape and looked at the 2x2 again, it was 85 (no dollar sign) and yes that was the full Suggested Retail. I really did not expect that. The two views are top with printer/scanner better detail and bottom with iPhone 5 truer color.
Ok, here is one. I got it at only about 15$ above it's current melt value. MS 61 is not a very high grade for this year, in fact it is pretty 'run of the mill' for getting one without a lot invested because of it's availability. It had a minting of nearly 2.5 million, and the only rarities seem to be at the gem level, a level I will likely never attain in my life, but that's ok. I'm actually much of a smaller collector for coins anyhow, so this is unusual for me. It is also unusual because I don't normally gravitate to this kind of coin. But I thought it would be fun to own for a while, anyhow.
Most purchases for my Prime Number Set are going to be unexpected now, as I just need the right coin to come along at the right price with the right date. I have no idea what the type or country will be anymore, now that I'm done back to 1721. Case in point, this 1619 Danish Krone. I had no idea I'd go after it until it came up in an auction search for "1619."
Your Prime Number registry set was an unexpected and pleasant surprise. Thanks. I read the topic posts here in CoinTalk and followed the link to your PCGS page. I also printed it as a PDF and archived it. I have a special interest in prime numbers. (The Code Book on my blog here: https://necessaryfacts.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-code-book.html) Primes are important to the creation of public key (asymmetric) cryptosystems. Basically, you start with two large primes, multiply them, and get a key number. Factoring that number back down to its primes is computationally difficult. We use this to secure bank transactions and to connect two cellphones for a call and to protect the passwords of BBS users among a lot of other stuff. Anyway, good luck with your set, and thanks, again.
Sure has terrific eye appeal for the grade. Agreed, this is an intriguing set for sure @messydesk. Would love to see a @lordmarcovan style thread with photos to see the journey.
Well not a half dime, nor IHC,Buffalo nickel,or a Morgan dollar.....but it was love at first sight....now I do have a few Hammered Spanish cobs...but this is like the square peg in a round hole.....
And my last find of 2018 was another curve ball.....my photo does no justice...in hand this medal colors reminds me of a low lit sunset of rose golden colors. The 4 bells in the correct lighting glow with the hue of a last minuite sunset.
I have to give @MercuryBen the credit as this piece came from him,Ben and I have horse traded a few times...and must say each transaction between us has been a pleasure. Thanks Ken
Mom-in-Law............seasons past. The poor gal has passed. God Bless her. Passing through your neck of the woods on Monday, Paddy. At least that's the plan....... 'Key' Bridge in site........
Well got you a toll plaza open......remember only 180 feet to the surface depending on the tide. BTW if the Ravens win tomorrow no traffic worries the city will be sleeping it off....yes correct I said "if" but my cheer leader friends tell me it's a shoe in.
