Collecting Eisenhower dollar - Any advice?

Yes, I have the FEV and the three 72 Philly varieties. I went on the Ike Group Website and there are tons more varieties. I think the 1974D Silver is out of my league though.

Out of curiosity, how did that Type 2 work out for your set? What do you grade it?

 

Whether or not they are the overwhelming majority of banks/credit unions will refuse to do it. It's no where near as easy as walking into a bank and asking them to order you a bag of Ikes.

 

IF you can get your bank to order them directly from the Fed, that usually isn't too eazy. Many banks won't, most don't even know how (their order forms don't have a place on them for requesting the large size dollars and they don't seem to understand that you can write in the request on it) Then there is the problem han many banks only order from their main office and it is the main branch that does the actual ordering from the armored car services or the Federal Reserve. So you need to find that Main branch.

And why 2000? Ike dollars came 1,000 to the bag. The small size dollars were 2000 to the bag.

 

By 'old' standards, I see it as a 58. By 'modern' standards, maybe a 61. I love it. But then again, I sent a SBA 1979 near date to NGC that looked similar and she came back a 64. I also noticed when I dug out my Ike box, that a few of the clad ones are starting to develop a subtle edge toning. I also noticed my NON-Happy Ending eagle 1971-D is a VERY strong strike, stronger than on the websites that show the crater differences between the types. But it's not the Happy Ending eagle, because the radial lines OUTSIDE the crater are NOT present.

 

In order to get a bag directly from the Federal Reserve, it needs to be a federally chartered major commercial bank. MOST commercial banks are state-chartered and all their change comes through an intermediary.

 

I checked mine also. 34 (23 non-proof, 11 proof). Debating whether to include the '71D FEV. OK, debate over. I am now in the market for one.

If you're looking for a slabbed example you may very well be able to find one unattributed like I did recently. I ran across this 1971-D PCGS MS65 for a BIN price of only $25, and it was a "hidden in plain sight" FEV. I jumped on it. The photos in the auction were good enough to showcase the earth clearly, and that was the dead giveaway. Here's the link:

I did the set by PCGS coin numbers and that makes the set with 54 different coin numbers. This set I spent eight years to complete.
If you look at the coin number that PCGS assigned to them in a population report, the 1976 PDS there are 14 different designations, Type 1 and 2, MS, Proof, cameo and deep cameo or no designation for the proof, and silver and clad. I have 56 coins in the showcase but two are errors, one is a clipped planchet 1972 type one, and a 1973-S silver labeled as a clad, in a old rattler slab, and is just a labeling error.

Yes, This is a custom set.
and you would need to build it in the registry set under the other category.
I have asked PCGS if they could start something like this, to have a set in Ike Dollars to include all PCGS numbers for it. But there is nothing like that yet. Only the best grade is in any set.

 

That's what I'm having trouble doing. I can't figure out how to start this new set under "Collector's Showcase / Modern Issues - 1964 - Present" How did you do it?

First you need to be logged in.
go to "MY SET REGISTRY" Then "MY SHOWCASES"
Create New Showcase and use the down arrow to select the category and then give it a name.

I guess PCGS has changed the way to add a new set with the new upgrade site.

 

In my copy of the Red Book (2015 68th Edition), "Variety 1" is valued higher, but "Variety 2" is described as "modified with accented crater lines".



In all non-redbook referrences I have seen the FEV is certainly valued higher, described as having accented crater lines, and is referred to as Type 1. This is inconsistent with what I show above from the Red Book.

Which is it man!!!???
