My kids just ran across this one. I have 20/20 vision, as do they and Uncle Jack Daniels isn't hanging out tonight. My kids pulled it and I zoomed with the custom high tech gear this pro-ookie uses. (trust me, as soon as I can, I'll get the dang red book so I don't blow CT with questions, but I truly dig the input from different sources). So we took pics at different angles, low/high hues, B&W, etc. My kids were on an '89, No "VDB" hunt because that's what they wanted to do but they pulled this one. Had to send it to my Sensei's...
I would try my hand at diagnosing your coin. I am reaching out (or inward?) to channel @paddyman98 and @Pickin and Grinin and I am going to say: What you see on the date is die doubling - and that your coin is worth one cent. Now I can sit along side you and wait to hear what our experts say. Happy New Year to you and the kids, btw!
Thanks @LaCointessa, @paddyman98, @Pickin and Grinin, @lordmarcovan, @Collecting Nut and the other Sensei's is who I'm waiting on. Didn't forget about you @Hookman and anyone else that shoots it to me straight. I feel like I see dd as well as an additional shadow in addition to thay from all angles and light angles I hit the coin at. I can provide more pics of anywhere, any angle, if needed. I tried to find an 89 with an error or DD that even looked similar to this online, no dice... So I posted it for the pros. Still pickin away and will wait for the feedback. Appreciate it. Back to the Grind...
And my apologies, Happy New Year to you as well.. They're picked out and knocked out.. Daddy needs to stay awake in hopes of paying Santa back after the holidays..... Lol
Classic DDD - Die Deterioration Doubling common on Copper Plated Zinc Cents http://www.error-ref.com/die-deterioration-doubling-incuse/ Considered Worthless Doubling I was a Sensei many years ago. Taught mostly kids and young adults.. Black Belt - Japanese Shotokan Karate (That is a digital picture of an actual photo.. No cellphones back then!)
Well, LaC , you are at least partly correct Ma'am. What you see on the date is not die doubling( or DD ), it is called strike doubling and sometimes die deterioration doubling and sometimes machine doubling. Although you are correct with your value assessment : It is worth one cent. For some reason the 1989 cents have an awful lot of this. I have many of them, some with a lot more than this.
Darn, Paddy, you are quick on the trigger. I was still typing. I'm thinking that's you in the pic? Much younger and with more hair. Don't feel bad...I'm the same.
Hey, Hagen, that is still a cool coin to keep, for Show and Tell or just to remind us what true doubling does NOT look like. You've got some great looking kids. I'm trying to get my grandkids interested but it's very hard to wean them off of the video games and TV set. lol
Nailed that one... Called out for Sensei and BAM! There he is. Knew @paddyman98 had something up his sleeve. All due respect, I'm a fighter myself but my only trophies are war wounds and a reconstructed right shoulder. Thanks guys, but "curse word"... I thought I had something.... I'm posting one more before I got crazy, haha.. No, I love this stuff.... Switching to dimes.... I have a 1975 Roosevelt Dime "No S" and with my extreme wisdom and resources, aka "Google" this is rare or I'm missing something.... Here it is. Again, Thank you and much respect to all.
I believe the one you need to find is on a Proof Dime.. Not the Business Strike Dime as yours is. No Mint Mark is a Philadelphia Minted Dime.
... There's my sign... Time to clock out for a few hours and kick off at zero dark 30 for some more... Someday.... Someday real soon... I will post something worth at least twice FV... Haha.. Thanks @paddyman98 and crew... Time clock.. Punched.
Ugh..that is what I meant..deterioration of the die causing that effect....Grrrrr (growling at myself). I won't forget that important word again. Makes a big difference. If it were something special I would have lots of important coins around here because when I first started examining US cents, I put all that looked like this together in one place. Now I can put them in rolls and return them to the bank. Thank you @Hookman !!
Thanks guys. I definitely need a better set up but first and foremost, being able to determine the precise differences between my MAD coins and DD, etc. I can see that something is wrong, I've studied on the differences but the Sensei(S) have taught me more. Still need a nice quality loupe or microscope rather than shaky hand Samsung. I'll get there folks, I'll get there .... And when I do... Make a call and get the parade organized, haha! Onward I go!
