Hi all! Relative newbie in dollar coins (and numismatics as a whole). I am hoping 2019 will be my year to finish an Ike dollar collection. Any advice ? Have at it...

Yes, keep your eyes open for all three varieties of the reverse on 1972 Philly Ikes.

On the most valuable one, Type II, the Caribbean Islands are just an amorphous "shmutz" instead of bumps.

If you wanna search through them you can buy them from the federal reserve for 2000 at a time.

I'd suggest that if you buy them raw to seek out nicer coins. Beware of Ikes still in the mint set packaging because many are ruined by haze.

Collecting slabbed coins is not at all a bad idea but be choosy and avoid pop tops unless you can afford them. A lot of the "just missed" coins are about as nice as they come and are very inexpensive compared to the effort of finding them raw.

Ikes in choice and gemmy condition make a very attractive set and doesn't cost all that much. Remember the wholesale price on common date BU's is $2.50 and you don't have to pay very large premiums for choice examples.

Proof sets might be your best bet for proofs. They're giving these away now days and even the choicest coins can be had for the effort of smashing a screwdriver through the seams.

@cladking is on the mark with his comment on hazing. Ike’s were one of the fuels that lit my young numismatic Fire way back when. They are large, eye appealing and easy to put together a set affordably..... But the mint issue sets were plagued with an odd hazing problem. Worse yet are the examples that somebody attempted to correct the hazing..... Plenty of nice Ike’s out there. Just look them over for hazed or cleaned pieces.

The way I have done it in the past is just going to the Bank Teller and asking to order Eisenhower Dollars.

I'd be AMAZED if they're still orderable this far on. That's now over 40 years ago.

V.Kurt, do you consider the 1971D Type 1 (so called in the Redbook; aka friendly eagle variety) to be necessary to complete an Ike set?

When I "finished" my set, no. But now, I'm sure looking to add one. Darned shame, too. My box only has room for the 36 I now have.

36? Without the Friendly Eagle I am at 34.

Nope, I have 36 without that. Three 1972(P) varieties, right?

Yes. I will double check my math when I get home. I think I have 23 non-proof, 11 proof. hmmm

    Me too.

I'm home. You're right. 34 is correct. My box has 3 rows of 12. Two open. I shifted the back one in row 1 to the front of row 2, to remind me where the next one goes. I do have a few unsearched rolls to go through for the Happy Ending eagle.

Box? Do you mean those blue Whitman Boxes? Or, so other, better display box? Right now, I have each of mine, in individual capsules, in the little blue Whitman boxes.

Good luck with this set! I just completed it last month when I bought the 72 Type II in PCGS MS 64 on EBay. Only set me back $120 and I got a toned Beauty. I think I have 35 coins in my set @V. Kurt Bellman .

Do you have the Happy Ending Eagle 1971-D? That makes 35 for me too.
