I agree....if I pay in a timely manner after the end of the auction and meet the conditions of the sale, why shouldn't I have positive feedback? that said, I wouldnt mind a means of removing positive feedback left if the transaction goes to pot IF it is investigated and confirmed.
I agree with Doug's take that eBay was founded for the "little guy" and that was true outside of coins as well. But as rules continue to "evolve" and "new pricing" continues to be imposed, I think the balance is tipping more and more towards a bias to power sellers. And as with every other large group, there is good and bad in that group. Between ever increasing fees and ever increasing postage rates, I think that the marginal small transactions are being squeezed out-- it's just not worth the hassle. (It already wasn't worth it at more expensive venues, as has been pointed out.) I haven't sold anything on eBay since 2005 and I don't expect I will anytime soon. I also find myself looking there less and less, as the bad continues to slowly drive out the good in several categories I check and the extra shipping and "handling" makes items I might be interested in less and less of a good deal. Bottom line for me is that eBay has "jumped the shark" and if I knew enough other folks feel the same way, I'd be shorting the stock.
I've never used a auction house like Heritage, but have a few Rainbow Toned PCGS MS 65 Morgans to sell. Who is the best for Morgans? Heritage, Superior, Teletrade?
Yes, but it varies depending on which auction you want to consign to. And if I recall it also depends the total value you consign - there are minimums.
I sell and buy on ebay. I totally agree with you (bold). Retaliatory feedback has gotten way out of control. Just go to the feedback forum and you will be amazed at what you will see concerning feedback. Many of the sellers that post there openly admit that "if you leave me one, then I'm going to leave you one" no other option. This will always be a touchy subject between buyers and sellers. I also read on that same forum where sellers want to block any buyer with "0" feedback. Wouldn't that pretty much rule out any new buyers from participating on ebay?
no negs for buyers could be a double edged sword. I think more people will get negs that deserve it, but I can also see a buyer getting a package and say " look it only cost $1 to send this package and I got charged $2.50 or $3, I think I will neg the seller". Also I can see an impatient buyer say wow it too 5 days for a priority package to arrive.....neg. Gee the pic did not show that little mark on the coin......neg. I don't want the item but don't want to hassle getting a refund.....neg. And on and on. I hope it works but I can see problems coming, and no I don't have the answer.
This news story link was posted on a non-coin discussion forum which is also covering this topic: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,326686,00.html Interesting data point: "EBay makes 80 percent of its revenue from the top 20 percent of its sellers," sayeth News of Fox. There's your answer right there... some non-trivial fraction of the other 80 percent of sellers are not necessarily worth keeping, unless the amount of money that makes them worth keeping is extracted from them. That can be accomplished by, among other things, requiring Paypal for new sellers or (if I read this right) established members who have sold fewer than 100 times. Hello, little guy... that'll be 2.9% + 25 cents per listing whether the buyer uses a credit card or not-- which has always been my beef about the "Premier Member" sham.
That's a very good point. Negatives for no good reason. I suppose we may see the "darn with faint praise" positive appearing in greater numbers, i.e. "Buyer paid within 300 days"-- but that implies that sellers have the time to read a potential buyer's feedback before cancelling a bid. Speaking of which, we'll probably see more of that as well, in addition to the block list going to 5000 names. Wouldn't it be interesting to introduce the converse, where a buyer can specify a list of sellers from which he/she does not want to see listings? I wouldn't be holding my breath for that...
After some thought I think this may be good. We can all buy some piece of crap off of ABONCOM for a couple of bucks and the neg him with out worry. His feedback will tumble!
That is the best idea I've heard in a long time. I also got a kick out of the ebay message, something to the effect of NEW LOWER INSERTION FEES, adjusted final value fees.
I will add the old, boring oft' repeated phrase - "If it weren't for e-bay, I couldn't sell my stuff". E-Bay- Love it or Leave it - It's the most wonderfulest thing in the world if you're miles from coin civilization. Heck, I can throw a roll of Junk Peace Dollars up on e-bay on a 3-day auction and expect to have $250 in hand by the end of the week. OR...... I could put ads in the local paper or sit forever at flea markets or ........ You get the idea!!! E-Bay may not be the cheapest gig in town, but it is THE gig in town.
