I have this coin that was flattened out by being laid upon train tracks. The Obverse was placed face down. Which was very course and erased all the design features, (apart from a bust facing Right?) The Reverse fared a little better and some of the coins designs can be seen due to the smooth wheel on the train. I believe that the coin was hit at least twice, due to a thickness rise on the Obverse.
This is a challenge to ID this coin, If you get it, Please post "I got it".
So that others can guess. Maybe someone will PM you for a clue.
It has a very dark patina which make it hard to see, but I think my photo should be good enough for an ID.
Clues as follows, Right facing bust, Plain edge as far as I can tell, US issue.
Good luck and have fun. ask Questions. First photo is of Obverse.
    other three are of reverse.

I was saying that the coin is earlier than an Indian head cent.

Send me a PM Randy. I can't even tell if it's a coin but I'll accept the OP's word that it is.

It didn't just get run over by a train or two. It was run over by several fully loaded 100 plus cars of a freight train.

I think I have the general type but not the actual year... there are a few big clues glaring out from all of that smoosh that identify it, I believe...

I know, That is what I said to myself.
And why is it still around after all these years. It came out of a bag of foreign Poundage as a cull.

I have not been able to assign a year to this coin, as it was on the Obverse.
I have not been able to see anything but an "L" , and the crude outline of a bust on the obverse.
