Last week I posted my wife's Saturnalia gift to me. Yesterday one of my daughters sent me two coins she purchased for me from a dealer near her home. I asked her to pick out something that struck her eye and she picked the Tiberius As with the globe and rudder, and the Domitian denarius. Tiberius was a devotee of astrology (not navigation or commerce or geography) and he (or a smart moneyer) put together this image of globe and rudder to demonstrate that cosmic forces guide the world. The denarius of Domitian she chose was because of the many talents that Minerva (Athena) exemplified, especially wisdom. When my children were very little I used to read and tell bed time stories from ancient mythology. Though adult young ladies now, they still recall these stories, much to my delight.
While the Tiberius has imperfect centering, it greatly favors the important parts of the legend and has excellent eye appeal. The important part to me is the bold TR POT XXXIIX since there are so few coins that show the double subtractive 38. I so very much wish my similar coin had that date but I have the boring XXXVII poorly centered so, even if it were a 38, it would not have the appeal of your coin. My daughter and wife both know that I would be impossible to buy for, especially when it comes to coins. You obviously did a fine job enabling your daughter to select good coins. I did get a numismatic accessory Christmas present from my daughter this year. Both this year and last, my copy of the Triton auction catalog was bent up when the carrier shoved it into my standard mail box along with the usual ads and bills. This year I was given an nice oversize mailbox that will accept an undistorted auction catalog and most books so I won't have to deal with them being thrown on the driveway behind the car (I ran over a book from Amazon about five years ago when I backed out of the garage). On at least 363 days a year, my junk mail would fit the old box but now I am ready to receive large parcels in mint state. I assume this means that CNG will drop me from the list before Triton XXIII is printed but I can always order used books from Amazon in the 1 cent plus $3.99 shipping category to make it all seem worthwhile. Oh, yes, the Domitian is nice, too, but I really like that Tiberius.
Great choice spending quality Dad time with your daughters @kevin McGonigal. For us gals, I don't know if there is any input more emotionally significant when we are children. Happy New Year!!
Daaang, your daughter has a good eye! I am envious. Mine, who is wonderful in so many other ways, couldn't care less about my hobby. So it goes. Maybe she shouldn't. Still say you're lucky, though. Love that Tiberius. I was unfamiliar with the type until now.
I am blessed in that my son-in-law does this very thing with my granddaughters though the subject matter is more geared to fairy tale stories
I have 6 Daughters... I grew up with all boys in my family... learned a LOT about how to raise Daughters in my lifetime! Now, they are all grown up and up to now, have given us 6 Grandkids, 3 of whom are Granddaughters... fun. Your Daughter is AWESOME @kevin McGonigal ! (just like mine... )
She lives some distance from me but she had some help working with one of the Vcoins dealers who lives near her and from whom I have purchased coins before so he has a pretty good idea of what I like in coins.
