First picture is of my coin. 1961-D quarter seems to be D/D. Second picture is of RPM FS-502 from PCGS I have been comparing it to. What do you think? Sorry about the picture quality, best I could do. Thank you
To me it doesn't look like #4 . http://varietyvista.com/09b WQ Vol 2/RPM Detail Pages/1961DRPM004.htm It look more like #2 . http://varietyvista.com/09b WQ Vol 2/RPM Detail Pages/1961DRPM002.htm
WE do have a good look at placement even though the images are taken at different angles. The vertical of the R and distance from it. I am just not seeing the placement as correct. Also the inner part of the D doesn't seem to carry the correct characteristics.
I'm no expert, and I'm probably wrong more times than I'm right, but in my experience when there is that much displacement with mechanical doubling there is MD found elsewhere on the coin, especially in the area nearby. The reason, I would suppose, is that mechanical doubling is caused by a die "bouncing" or sliding, which would make doubling over much of that side of the coin. Here I don't see any sign of it except on the mint mark. (The OP's picture does not show the whole coin.) That would lead me to think RPM. If anything bounced it would appear to be the punch when punching the mint mark rather than the die when striking the coin. Help me out here if I'm way off.
I saw that part of the D but think it is attached to the scratch going north. I think that better photos would say this coin is well circulated. @Neal I agree that most of the time The MD will show on other devices. If you look at the ends of the branches the right one looks to have the same characteristic.
I see that, but the orientation of the shift, if any, seems to be different from the D. It's hard to tell for sure on the photo.
