Actually, the aurei where struck in pure gold .999/.998 fine. The Byzantine Empire began debasement of their hyperpers around 1100AD. But....the weight of the Aureus went from 8g. (Augustus) to 5.35 (Constantius I) John
Price is on auction data... The coin was FDC and estimated at 12K Swiss Francs, this was in 2006/ Tkalec AG Auction. I ended up getting it for starting price of 9K + 15% Comm. fee= 12500 Swiss Francs/ a bargain. Its classified in Calico as a R-4. Heritage sold one in NGC CH-AU 4/5 3/5 for 34KUS. FDC=TPG slabbed GEM MS 5/5 5/5=Mucho Dineros
A FDC one would go twice that, but then its probably a great deal. R-5 means ultra rare/ when you compare that to that 1857-S SS Central America Double Eagle, where a FDC MS-66 realized 25K, and there are thousands being salvaged from the wreck Its easy to pick the better coin.
woahhhh omg. That's too much money to fit in the palm of my hand. id be afraid to lose it or something LMAO
I am not afraid off losing it once in my possession. I just worry when its in transit from Switzerland to Canada. I usually have it sent in a neutral reg. letter/ so no one who handles it knows whats inside the letter.
