Hello all.. My name is brandi i know pretty much nothing about coins. And am interested in learning. I found this nickel and it looks different than all others i have seen. Kinda wondering know why. Im hoping someone here has the answers im looking for..
It's been 'tapped' on the edges to give it the look you see on it now. It's not an error, and didn't leave the US Mint like that. (no, it's not a partial collar error)
Ok.. What about the outter rim it looks like more than one layer or something odd.. Idk.. Its pretty neat tho..
I'll elaborate a tad on what Fred told you because this was a favorite pastime for me when I was a youngster.... If you have this kind of time on your hands, you tap the edges of a coin (nickels were favorites) and after a bit the edges raise. More you tap, the more the edges would raise. The ultimate goal being to drill out the center and make a ring. Used to be a common thing for us bored youngsters back in the day.
It has been spooned/hammered. They usually make a coin ring this way. Then they drill the center out.
Yup, good thing I wasn't drinking anything. I've got to get off CT for a few hours. Too many members appear to be suffering from a wee bit too much spiked egg nog.
If you want tor do it for sales, here are the set of tools and also instructions. Expensive ! way more than a spoon and drill, but his examples are excellent. Jim https://jasons.works/
