I am thinking of submitting some coins to one of the grading services they both request Registered Mail for submissions and returns.

I was talking to my neighbor who is a Postal Carrier and asked him about Registered Mail. He said it is no longer different from Priority Mail, he said it used to be tracked at every step but now they just toss it in his bag, it is still sold to the public as secure and tracked but he said the reality is that while they do "sort of track" it really isn't tracked much different than Priority.

You don't have to use registered mail. Depending what it is it may not be worth it. I usually use express/priority unless the value is over what they will insure as I don't want to wait an extra week or two for it to get there.

As far as the Registered being the same as priority, maybe at his post office but not overall. If it really did work the same Registered would move much much faster

Unlike Priority Mail, Registered Mail is locked in a safe overnight at each stop along the way. Also unlike Priority Mail, you cannot track the whereabouts of Registered Mail at all stops along the way . . . You just get notification of delivery once it finally reaches its destination.

    Ha!

That is a scam they sell you, but it is not actually true (at least, not at my post office!) I go to pick up a so-called Registered package worth $10,000, and they find it tossed in a bin with the rest of the regular mail.

Don't pay for Registered. It is a waste of money and a lie.

It sounds like some post offices comply and others don't. I can personally vouch for my packages being properly locked up at my own post office.

My post office uses a safe that locks just with a key in the daytime. They call it the red key and only one person has the key. That person is responsible for the packages that day. I went to pick up a package once and the guy with the key took the key with him to lunch. I had to come back later for the package.
It seems like years ago, I had to use registered mail to get enough insurance to cover some packages. I thought it was still that way.

If the value is over about $1k DO pay for Registered, it's cheaper than Priority insured. And as the value increases it gets a LOT cheaper.

Registered insurance limits are WAY higher than Priority and Express as far as I know. I believe it's 5k for Priority/Express, and Standard Registered is like 25k but you can go higher if you do it in person.

Money wise absolutely, unless speed is an issue
