Most likely some damage hit the right side of the 8.

Thanks Michael, I'm new on this site but have had many different responses to it. The color on the copper is consistent and looks undamaged, reason why I'm questioning possible error... I appreciate your feedback.. I'm posting another possible one, 1952 S here in a minute...

Seconded on a hit. Copper is very easily moved around by a direct or indirect hit.

    I agree with Michael. Damaged 1928 S.

    A damaged 1928. The 8 took a hit.

Late reply but man, that's too bad. I had a couple coin guys take a look in person, said it didn't look like it took a hit at all. No marking or anything before or on the 8 showing a hit. Said he'd never seen anything like it. I'll chalk it up as a 1of1 like the 1982, only 1 known.

It was damaged. If you enlarge the coin in first photo , area of the date, you can see the faint curved outline of the bottom loop before the force of a hit caused it to move to the other side.

Even in the photo youcan see the right side of the 8 was hit and straightened leaving a faint 8 in the original place.

If you don't like it being a damaged 8, call it a 9 with a die crack on the lower left. :)

I would have to agree that your coin is damaged but a decent example anyway, For it to grade you shouldn't expect much more than a VG8 making it a $2 coin retail. Not worth the costs of grading I wouldn't think @Hagenhomestead

I would suggest you find some new coin guys

Many members on here have been collecting for decades. They have studied the minting and die making process and have looked at thousands and thousands of coins. Certain things just can't happen during the minting process

Another thing many new collectors don't realize is that a lot of coin dealers, especially the small local guys, don't know much about error coins. Nothing wrong with that, just something to keep in mind. Anybody can sell coins.

Finally, one thing I've noticed about CT is that if somebody provides a wrong answer, it will be corrected. If you get similar responses in a couple posts, there's a good probability that you have the correct answer

I hear you and I agree. Maybe down here they've just had too much Egg Nog, mixed with their lack of knowledge. I just took quite a few to some guys and got that response but I'll stick with you folks and move onto the next. Truly appreciate your help everyone, sincerely.. Happy Holidays!
