Bust Half Nuts' surprise. This one is (especially) for Ben. I got this piece this weekend, and, yes, it is a low grade, but: The countermark is excellent and (grading of the countermark) would probably be about VF, altho the host coin is only a good. Before you all ask, I paid $45 for the coin in a very scratched up Interceptshield holder. Comments? Opinions? Thanks, feel free to make negative comments, nasty appraisals, and very bad jokes. P.S. I forgot it is O-103a, which is R-3.
very nice coin, Frank. I love the older series and I am glad when you show them, because I learn so much in the process. keep up the good work.
Thanks, Mike. dreamer: It was common practice in the 1800's. They were used for advertising purposes.
Once again I have to say that I'm a new collector. I understand where countermarks came from, advertisements and some personal vanity. Are there countermarks that make the coin more collectible. Are there coutermark collectors. I'm just curious and still trying to learn. By the way thankyou to all on the sight. I have learned so much here.
If what Im reading is the "Ward" that applies your piece is pretty rare in the token/counterstamp world. There are (3) reported in the Standard catalog of US Tokens. (1) R.8 HT# G420 on a 1816 & 1838 Large cent, (1) R.9 HT #H420 Which the counterstamp was struck on a Spanish 8 Reales & (1) R.9 HT# J420 on a 1807 US Large cent "WARD /67 MARKET ST. Johm Ward was a silversmith located at 67 market street from 1803 to 1839. Very Cool-
LOL, Love it. Nice addition to your collection. How far are you from the 'CLUB" as it were? Take Care Ben
Treashunt! You have thrown down the gauntlet and I accept it sir! Bad joke forthcoming! You now have a Ward coin. How long till you complete the set with a June, Wally and Beaver? clembo
Ben: Thank you, and I am still a bit away from the application. I think that I still need about 10 pieces to start the process. (and I had better have a few extras, just to be safe). Clembo: Thanks, I need that. Also, see Mike's answer before replying. (thanks, Mike, ya beat me to it!) budgood: Yes, it is Ward (in script). Does it match the style of the listed ones? Thanks for looking it up, I do not have that reference. What else do they say?
Treashunt, Actually I like the coin but as Beaver would say "I don't know about the Canadian coins on accounta I'm not from Canada and junk"
Unfortunaltely the book does not picture it , but with the others listed it does seem that it fits the description. I copied all the info that was listed in the first response.Sorry but thats about all that I can tell you .These can sometimes be vauge in the catalogging.
Sweet coin man! Can't think up any jokes from my end, but if I do, like Arnie said, "I'll be bach" . Sweet coin. :thumb: Phoenix
