    WOW, WOW and WOW !

Never seen that German East Africa elephant before, charming.

What happened to the reverse of the Holland double ducat or can I not see it due to the limitations of my I-phone ?

Great Coins. I've tried to get German East Africa Rupiens before. Even the small ones are very expensive. I can only imagine what you paid for that one.

Thank you Tibor! And Merry Christmas :) I think January has to be the most tantalizing month for us collectors. CNG/ Heritage/ Stacks/ New York Sale/ Kunker all have major auctions. Good time to win the lottery:happy:

    Thanks....
Actually nothing compared to what the AV 5 Dukaten from Bavaria came too.:( Prices are getting out of control, to many rich speculators are ruining the hobby for the rest of us ordinary folk.

    Thanks FitzNigel:)
What I like about this coin the historical aspect. Alessandro VI was the Spanish Pope Rodrigo Borgia, Father of Caesar and Lucretzia. Its believed he was poisoned by Julius III (pope after Alexander VI)

My fav. animal is the Jaguar, they are cute. But elephants are featured on many ancient coins. Here are two Jaguars, male/ female cuddling:happy: 09f7e808b911ec99cd1e5541abd7daf4.jpg

What a thread panzerman! I do not recall seeing many of these in previous posts. Its hard to mention just one, but the detail on the 1/4 dukat from Basel really speaks to me. Curious to see what the 2019 January auction cycle brings.

Thanks, that Quarter Dukat was in an Elsen Auction. These guys really grade strict, like CNG/ Kunker/ DNW etc. I once took a raw graded Elsen EF coin to a TPG/ where it was a MS-66! Basel was known for their beautifull show dukats/ talers. The highest denomination for that issue year was a 105g. AV 30 Dukaten (stunning coin) it sold for 1.1 million sfrcs! More in Donald Trumps league.

I have to say I have more mixed experience with Elsen grading, in particular with lower grades. Some of their VFs are less than that in my view.

While panzerman-style beauties in very high grade soar ever upward in price, those of us who spend much of our time labouring in the fields of VF or worse have seen the price of many of our coins move little over recent years and even decline. This is not all bad. It allows new collectors with limited budgets to enjoy our hobby.

I was having something to eat, while looking at the Berlin Sale/ Kunker catalogue, they have amazing material, the Talers from Sacshen are magnificent. But the 10 Dukaten from Basel takes the cake. Stunning coin:) The Schwarzenberg coll. is to die for, heavenly:angelic:
