I live in Ohio, me and some friends will always keep our eyes out for one cent varieties and we see quite a few coins between the few of us on a weekly basis . I always keep the older ones when they're in a higher grade of condition and put the less appealing looking pennies in a big vase. One thing we've all noticed is a a near absence of San Francisco minted pennies or coins of any kind for that matter. I litteraly have found just 2 S penny and only found it after a couple years of this while sorting through thousands of pennies weeding out the post copper era pennies. My theory is that S mints coming from the Pacific coast mostly stay west of thev Mississippi River and don't make it this far, could this be true? Oh ya, my only S mint coins are a 1971 s and 1968s. Here's the 71
You are correct in your thinking, plus the S mint cents 68-74 were minted in far fewer numbers than the P and D cents.
I started collecting in the late 60s/early 70s, when SF was still minting cents for circulation. I was in Maryland, and S-mint cents were basically unheard of. Finding one in change would have been a much bigger deal than finding a Canadian coin, or even a silver dime or quarter. I say "would have been", because I'm not sure I ever actually found one -- and I know I found Canadian coins, and occasionally even silver.
there at my second house you might of heard of it "fort knox" i take coin collecting serious and i need th best protection for my coins. if you want some ill sell you 10 thousand of them for a million bucks, good price let me konw
Wkikipedia~~The new Mint was opened in 1937. Beginning in 1955, circulating coinage from San Francisco was suspended for 13 years. In 1968, it took over most proof coinage production from the Philadelphia Mint, but continued striking a supplemental circulating coinage from 1968 through 1974.
@ob3rst1337 your right...I used to inspect the fire suppression system at Ft.Knox...sure alot of gold in there!
One thing we've all noticed is a a near absence of San Francisco minted pennies or coins of any kind for that matter. @Walter Marx Rarely ever see the S anymore in Tx. Out of a bag so 5000 wheats I searched I maybe found 2-300 S only
I think it’s mostly that there are only a few years where S Cents were minted. It been a long time and I think most of them have spread out by this point.
All years of wheaties command at least a small premium if they're S with the exception of maybe 2 years
would you pay a double premium for 200 thousand s wheat pennies, maybe i should tell the truth its time my grandpa work at the mint and when everyone went home for the night he went back and took all the s and put regular wheat instead did it for over 20 years..when he passed away in his will he wrote "please tell the cointalk.com the turh of the missing s wheat pennies" if you dont believe me go to fort knox thats where he stores them say ob3rst sent you
And all along the way there are collectors pulling them out and hoarding them because "you never see S mint coins in circulation". And then of course they haven't made S mint cents for 44 years so they have had plenty of time to disappear into change stashes.
