you can tell by the 2. Notice on the Large how the low part of the 2 is straight going to the base, whereas the Small date it bows out before curving down to the base.

Also you 8s are clearly more bulbous.
you have to learn to be totally unbiased and extremely critical in your analysis. It's not just "like" something, but "exactly" in what matches.

As this is my first post I will start by saying hello. In reference to your question concerning the small date I have attached 2 pics to show the difference. The easiest way I have found to ID the small date is to look at the space between the "2" and the edge of the coin. The 2 on the small date is noticeably farther from the edge. Hope this helps. Pic 1 is the small date. Pic 2 is the large date. Again, pay close attention the the "2". 1982SD Cent.jpg 1982-D Cu LD.jpg

The top is a Philly small date. The bottom is a Denver large date.

Those weights are correct. There is an allowable variance for each of +/- .13g.
Zinc 2.37-2.63 and copper 2.98-3.24. Most coins will fall very closely to the
    2.5 and 3.1 marks.

Correct, but the copper weigh- on my scale- 3 -3.1. This simply means that the calibration is off and there is an error. The error differential, however, is consistent across the different types of coins.

I have that same scale. Didn’t even know there was a way to calibrate it. $10 harbor freight deal. Mine shows pretty close to true as well. I figure some fluctuation is wear and others is grime.

  16. Not sure on those but mine has a calibration screw in battery compartment. If mine start weighing funky. Abattery change usually takes care of it. Use a Nickel to calibrate if you dont have weights. 5 grams
