Rolling a q tip moistened in the cleaning liquid that your working with (distilled water, acetone, etc will not create hairlines. Don’t rub, or otherwise scrub the surface or use paper towels ( which has wood fibers in it ) to dry the coin. Practice with junk coins and be patient and you will be ok. Search this website for prior posts and you will find wealth of information. Look for and study posts from GDPSM.

I’ve been meaning to ask where to purchase xylene.

Its availability seems to be a state by state thing. We're in the Three Mile Island evacuation zone, so I guess they figure we're already too far gone, so they let us play with dangerous chemicals all we like. "Morty, really, what could it hurt?"

I mean, I really don't understand why breathing the same air that Hollywood does wouldn't be in the same category, but it is what it is, right? I mean, if they are the way they are, and they are, the parts per million of "stupid" has to be pegging the meter, right?

I too am trying acetone on copper. I hold Doug’s advice in high regard, he has repeatedly warned against it. Others argue with him but we have all seen pink and orange copper coins. I’ll keep everyone posted.

I have plenty of rose bushes here as I’m a big fan of antique or heirloom roses. I find a thornapple thorn gives me better grip and control as it’s usually an inch and a half long (don’t ever get one under your kneecap - it happened to me when i was 12 and think it started the beginnings of my lifetime of knee problems) I usually use this on copper with stubborn verdigris after a soak in verdicare as acetone and a q tip will basically get most anything that’s actually going to come off of silver

And paper in Elizabethian England was made from discarded shredded clothing to the extent that people would have clothing stolen from clotheslines.

Swapped basins today and changed water out. Definitely some contaminants left behind. I may have caused rub on two of the buffalo hinds. They’re towards the middle. Maybe I’m just noticing them. Will be more careful in the future. Tomorrow, back to acetone, then a final rinse with distilled water and into a 2x2.

Why not distilled water and THEN the acetone? That’s what I’ve always read.

That’s what I’m doing. I messed up and did acetone first. Got overzealous. After distilled water, it gets acetone. Final rinse in distilled water to rinse away anything settled on the coin. The distilled water will evaporate and leave no particles. I’ve learned it so: distilled water, acetone, xylene, acetone, water.
