    1. Self Slabber's
    2. Ebay crooks
    3. Dipping coins

While everybody jumps in and generally bands together on the 1st two, #3 has made for some very entertaining reading !!!

Otherwise, this is a great place to hang out, you will meet a bunch of great folks and just as many great opinions !!!!

Troll, it's probably best if you just backed out of this thread. Let it develope naturally w/o vectoring from players within the process being discussed.

My apologies for making you think my frustration was directed at you personally. You are new here and don't know the history of the last couple weeks regarding dipped coins, but I certainly didn't mean to single you out.

Your opinion is welcome and valued, and I am duly embarrassed for making it seem otherwise.

Anyone want to lay bets that in a short time (few months or a couple of years) this half will begin to develop "milk spots" like other bullion and commemorative coinage has in the recent past. If it does then a possible (highly likely) reason may be at hand for why many of the ASEs which are admittedly cleaned/dipped in a 'secret wash' by the mint do so as well. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that 2nd set of pictures look PL to you? Not the rims, but the surface...

Yeah I'd bet that it doesn't suffer any ill effects at all. It is only when a coin is improperly dipped that problems develop later on. This is not a mistake that NCS makes.

And Bone, apparently you need to have a better understanding of the coin making process. First of all the US Mint washes the planchets, before the coins are struck, they do not wash the coins. Secondly the mint washes every single planchet there is regardless of denomoination prior to striking the coins. And thirdly to equate or even compare the planchet washing process the mint uses, to dipping a coin and its possible after effects is rediculous. They are completely different processes involving entirely different chemcicals and they take place at entirely different times in the life of the planchet/coin.

Sir, I'm aware of the processes the mint uses, NCS is another story... Furthermore, the individual or corporation who submitted the coin is a relative factor when there are those who think it helped place this coin where it's at now. Be it fact or not, there will always be doubt.

GDJMSP, I purposely never differentiated between coin or planchet since they both are essentially the same. A potato in the ground is the same as a potato in a bag. I merely stated that (according to those in the know) both the US Mint and NCS wash the product at some point. As far as the mint goes be that before the coin is struck or after the coin is struck is of no matter since they have the same (silver coin or Gold Coin, or whatever composition) surface both before and after, same with the NCS I reckon too.

Whatever NCS does (I think) it's similar to what the US mint does (beyond a distilled water wash) to their proof products.

I'm not trying to cause dissent, but I am voicing a clear, conscise, and repeated concern that individuals have voiced since the process began... Again, if the coin begins to spot up we'll never know unless the owner comes forth publically. NCS won't do us that favor...

Like UFOs and the official government response says they don't exist, but the amount of private data and opinions say other wise...

have we gone from coins to potatoes i am now begining to lose focus here what exactly are we trying to say here? NCS is evil and should close down? if we are not saying that than whats the problem with them doing conservation work when the owners of the coin want them to do it.

    He said what!

Honestly guys the job is impressive but I liked it better "before".

Sweet toning on the obverse now lost forever. :(

Now I've seen some pretty damn ugly Franklins in my time in NGC MS65 holders. Those could use some conserving but it all boils down to a matter of taste.

I suppose if you're going to have a coin cleaned/conserved you should send it to the pros.

clembo - that was not toning on the coin. That was PVC contamination.

I have no basis in fact, but for some reason I tend to agree. All I can say is wow - a nice way to remove PVC. I also agree a properly cleaned coin can still be a nice coin and can be slabbed. It seems to me I read some posts after first joining about someone who got coins graded with finger prints, dipped them and sent them back and got a 1 point higher grade. I see nothing wrong with it - it was done properly. This is just my opinion.
