Quite a difference. Wonder how they did it exactly...do you think it was just acetone or something else? http://www.ncscoin.com/news/enews/2008/January/article1.asp Before: After:
The last line ticks me off- "This coin was able to grade with NGC following professional conservation. " So there is another perfect example on how a cleaned coin gets into one of their slabs- Dipping or conservation either way -another of the 1000's of cleaned coins in TPG slabs that say they dont slab cleaned coins.
i have prof curators in my family. they dont get flamed. admitted they do rare books but not coins. if you do it professionally then noone will burn you. for example i am sure if GD had a TPG it would give out accurate grades even if he was a self slabber
Better yet, if 'John Doe Pay As You Go - Collector' were the one who submitted it to the NCS in the 1st place do you think it would have ended up graded by NGC???
It wasnt MY coin- & it ticks me off ... well to quote myself "So there is another perfect example on how a cleaned coin gets into one of their slabs- Dipping or conservation either way" -IT IS CLEANING therefore it should not be in a slab of a TPG that states they dont certify cleaned coins even though they do -
I dont have anything against conservation . To conserve a great piece of history or Numismatics is a wonderful thing. I just disagree with it being considered problem free after the fact.:smile
I think it was problem free to begin with. It just so happened to be a problem free coin, covered with some unappealing toning or whatever that is. You have to start with a problem free coin to get a problem free coin.
Man, they did a great job. :thumb: I myself am not apposed to cleaning, if it is done properly. To each his own. Phoenix
Im not trying to argue & I know they certify cleaned coins all day- I just dont think it is right. Thats what they are in business for,to get as many coins in their slabs as they can.
Fair enough, but if they did it your way, there wouldn't be hardly any coins in slabs. Except moderns that is.
Spock's exactly right, they don't say they won't certify cleaned coins, they say they won't certify improperly cleaned coins. BIG difference. I am tired of the whole "oh no, they dipped a coin, they must be evil" hysteria. Just because you would choose that ugly green corroded looking turd-nugget doesn't mean all the rest of us have to agree with you. And we aren't evil for disagreeing with your opinion, but every time there is a thread around here where a coin is properly dipped and greatly improved then the holier-than-thou originality police come out in droves to decry the atrocity. And I'm sick of it. [/soap box lecture] edited to add: The opinion expressed in this post is solely that of the author and is not necissarily shared by the board's other mods/admins, nor my employer.
It will be another shocker to learn that most old coins are cleaned. we dont want to believe it but its the truth so if you dont want cleaned coins then just stick to the moderns from us mint
I wouldn't but thanks for insinuation - & I DID say that conservation is a good thing . In addition I dont want anyone to agree with me nor was I tying to get anyone to. I was ticked ,not PO'ED not wanting to argue just stating one little thing - Not calling it an atrocity or any of the above-. Yes it was improved , Yes it looks GREAT- But it should still be in a NCS slab . And not for one second do I think that I am holier than thou.Or have ever had the opportunity to express my opinion to a forum of numismatic peers, its not like we/I have a ton of people to talk coins with. I guess my tiny opinion is not as welcome as I would of thought.
jaxsdad, I don't think there's anything wrong with expressing your opinion. However, for some reason, this same issue comes up all the time. People just need to understand... NGC, PCGS and others slab cleaned coins, just not harshly cleaned (as has been said). ANACS slabs harshly cleaned coins and notes it on the holders as such. Why is everyone always up in arms about it? As GD said, there wouldn't be near as many coins getting holdered if they didn't slab cleaned coins...and it's their business. NGC and PCGS aren't being dishonest about anything. They clearly state their policies in many places. It's their business to run as they see fit. Oh, and I think the current coin in question turned out very nicely and I doubt most of us could ever tell it was cleaned.
