The high grade precluded my perceivence. I just assumed the mark was on the holder. Felix Unger would have a field day on me........
Asking for feedback is the greatest part about CAC - it's an incredible service. I learned so much about grading in the two 3 minute phone calls I've had with John I felt bad I wasn't paying him for the advice. And yes I got hit with the obverse eye appeal rejection as well. It's part of the game and if I was being honest with myself the toning on that coin definitely wasn't for everyone. Also there is nothing ugly about that 1809 50C!
Don't think about CAC as "certifying the grade." Don't think about CAC as stickering coins "which are A or B for their grade." That's nonsense. CAC is really about "Would JA personally buy this coin." Doesn't matter if it is so-called high end for the grade or not. It matters if JA likes the coin or not. You have to remember their business model: They are stickering coins that they are willing to buy. Most of their revenue comes from buying and selling coins they've stickered. They only sticker ones that JA would be willing to buy. If you think about it, it's actually genius: people are paying JA to tell them if he would buy their coins, and then he buys only the ones he likes and sells them. What a racket!
https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1010034/lets-finally-clear-up-the-cac-myths The only nonsense is the bias some people say against them.
Thanks for the voice of reason, Jason. A different point of view (regarding pure and stupid sheep following numismatics). The wake up call has been heard (herd)......
Johnny Walker was good enough for Winston, and it's good enough for me. Hell, he beat the Nazis with a little help from his friends........
The general intent though is there and a point that does need to get made from time to time. For whatever reason some try and derail it every time Basic point is just that to many people say whatever they want about CAC as it's one of the topics that makes otherwise intelligent people lose their mind
I know.......point taken and recognized........and abided in a sense. Just that Jason raises a valuable point of view. This sticker stuff is what John will buy back? And other stuff rejected he has no time for? His own personal pork palace?
That's exactly why I posted the link, his point was complete nonsense. You really think JA wants to deal with all the 50-200 dollar coins they have stickered? How about all the common Mercs and Commens or Morgans which really are rough markets? There is plenty that they have stickered providing the service they say they would that isn't worth his time considering what he could be making elsewhere on the high end.
I felt the need to say something because I fell for opinions like that in the past at one time. Took a bit to realize how badly I had been mislead by people that just don't know, but now that I do it's frustrating to see people that should know better make posts like that
I counted 9 marks in hand. And I don't own an ANA grading guide, so I'd love to know what that old book says.
I always find CAC'ed coin discussions interesting. Some coins with stickers I like, but some I don't like. And just because it does not have a sticker does not mean I would not buy it. For the first coin I would want to see it in hand. I know a lot of people like that kind of look, but I am not one. The second coin I have no problem with that sticker - I like the coin from the pictures. I also know some of the premiums sealers ask for is ridiculous for the little sticker. Then again for the right coin I do not mind a premium - even if not stickered. Some of my coins even if I knew they rejected them for a sticker I would still buy them - it seems I always get to make the final decision.
No further comment required. Kudos to Jason for nailing this one, dead center in the middle of the target.
