Collection Aims for 2019?

I'm with this plan. My favorite professor in college advised, "Learn something about everything and everything about something."

General collecting is not undisciplined spending but leads to the goal of knowing something about everything. Specialists who never even looked at other things have a problem when they get bored or so close to completion that they never find a coin they 'need'.

Today there is a sale closing that has a few coins I would like to win. About half are in my specialty areas and the other half are things I like that are not. Will I win one or the other, neither or both? There will be another sale coming soon. I can't win them all. I hope I win one worthy of making my 2018 Favorites list but more likely will be just another coin in my specialty.

Finishing up the twelve Caesars and increasing my collection of the coins of Roman Egypt. Budget for coins in 2019 is about the same as 2018...

Like others have said, I let my interests dictate where I collect, and that changes often haha. My still-ongoing long term interest/focus is Roman Antiochene coinage (when it was provincial). Though, that has began to expand to include the larger Syrian area in general. In the past couple weeks, I've been having an increased interest in Roman Egyptian/Alexandrian coinage (o_O @ancient coin hunter I hope we don't cross paths:nailbiting::rolleyes::angelic:). I'm also on the hunt for a budget Ptolemaic octobol after seeing the pucks of @TIF and @Severus Alexander and others :p:D I've been close (runner up and lost by $1), but still shut out 3 times in the past ~6 weeks. I'm also exploring the Carthage/Punic Wars coinage, so I'll probably get some more of those.

Our paths may indeed cross @Justin Lee - as there are a finite number of coins available!

This is a great discussion! I've accumulated a lot of coins, but I have fallen behind in organizing their storage and display. I'm looking forward to getting some new cabinets/shelves, other storage, and getting into photographing my coins as well.

I'm always keeping an eye out for certain coins, so I skim through auctions and dealer listings regularly.

I think 2019 will be a great year for my coin collection and I hope everyone at CoinTalk have their 2019 collection aims fulfilled!

No plan, no goal, other than staying in my fields : Dombes, Rome (republic and Empire), UK. That makes quite a lot of opportunities to come. Budget will be the clue next year too.

And I have an eye on the coinage of french king Jean II le Bon (the Good) and might want to explore it a bit further (I have only one coin of his so far).

Great post, @Clavdivs ! Beautiful green coin! Having a goal in mind is a good thing. I will continue to be on the lookout for the best quality Judaean coins that I run across and upgrade some of the ones I already have. My original plan was to collect coins that were in use during the lifetime of Jesus. My collection has exceeded my expectations beyond my wildest dreams! I now plan to add a few more Nabataean coins but beyond that I don't have anything in mind. My Seleucid bronze collection has grown considerably this year and I almost forgot about my Indo-Scythian collection. Anyway, I sincerely thank my good friends and teachers on CTAF for the inspiration.

Anything that get my interest but definitely more emphasis on Alexandrian coins, and continued focus on Greek coins as well. I would also like to get back into late Roman and early Byzantine; been kind of neglecting them in my newfound pursuit of Alexandrian coins. Whatever I end up getting for next year, I can't imagine matching, much less topping, my Odoacer nummus that I got earlier this year. Perhaps if I come across a budget Charlemagne, an Aistulf (8th cent Lombard king) or papal siliqua :D

My list for 2019 begins with a Charlotte gold coin. My wife just bought me my 1st dahlonegah $5 gold piece 1843 D in xf. I’m from Ga so I just had to have one, now on to a Charlotte and I’ll have all the mints. That’s my goal for 2019.

I would like to put together a mint set of Constantine with the GLORIA EXERCITVS reverse and collect some more Byzantine coins. Otherwise collecting what is interesting.

Do you have a particular source for your gold coins? I'm also interested in assembling a branch mint gold type set.

I want a full denomination run of struck Republican bronzes. Also I want to complete my run of coins from Tragilos in Macedonia, and find another example of the recently reported unpublished bronze from Tisna in Aeolis so I can have a full set from there. I need more flying pigs so they're on the list, and want to find a large-flan Tetradrachm from Temnos (Ideally 38mm or more) and a large-flan Justinian follis (ideally 42+mm). A silver Silphium coin of Kyrene and Celery-leaf didrachm from Selinos would be cool too.

I'm certain that most coins added will be ones I never knew existed or that I wanted before seeing them.

On the artifact front, I want to collect as many more decorated and inscribed sling bullets as I can get my hands on, and hope that my contact in Cyprus can find me a rare bronze bullet embossed with a scorpion. It'll probably take a while but I WILL get a full ~2 foot long roman Iron Pilum one day, it's just a matter of time I tell ya, lol. I also want a large-size, perfect emerald/malachite green patina European bronze spearhead.

I always have a simple plan, my target is to have 900 AV coins by end of 2019. I need 60 to reach my goal.
Also I would like to add 2 Aurei in mintstate, plus a MS Solidus of Aelia Pulcheria/ Basiliscus. After that, early dated goldguldens/ Indian Sultanates AV Tankas/ Holy Roman Empire Dukaten etc. I am probably the most unorthodox collector in CT/ collect all over the map/ time periods. But its a, "Ball of Fun" gets better as time goes on....

I plan on getting a Ptolemy hockey puck next year, a Julius Caesar Elephant denarius, and a Alexander Tetradrachm all within budget constraints. Oh and anything that really catches my eye. I look forward to a prosperous 2019!

    What he said!

2018 has been amazing. I got all 5 obtainable coins with dies by Benvenuto Cellini, something I thought would take years to happen, if it happened at all. My goals for 2019 would be to obtain another coin of Francesco Francia and a coin or two designed by Leone Leoni-- the other two most important Italian Renaissance artists to make coins. I'd also love another struck Paduan but I don't know if I'll be able to match the deal I got last month.

I'd like to complete my set of low-end coins of high-end women. My favorites from this year include Eleanor of Aquitaine, Tamar of Georgia, and Galla Placidia-- and with a couple more big ones off the list that I'll be posting soon (when they arrive), Irene and Christina of Sweden are top priorities.

If I can, I'd like to get back to one of my first collecting loves (which is a bit more budget friendly but also lower priority) of small greek silver. I fell in love with a litra of Akragas earlier this year and I'd love to get octopus, silenus, and hare litrai to keep it company.

And, so help me god, I'd like to spend less money.

To each his own; some of my coins I collect for aesthetic and historical value, in which case eye appeal is important (though I'm not much of a condition snob). If I'm collecting a coin solely for its historical interest than my main priority tends to be budget, not beauty.
