It's an attractive coin but it looks cleaned to me.

Nice details, but I have to agree with Hobo. Looks cleaned. And dull, probably from multiple cleanings.

I agree with the "cleaned" part.

Who cares, they've ALL been cleaned. Nice looking EF-40, O-109 (R3) coin there... I'd pay $125 for it.

Are you net grading that as an XF-40?
Looks better to my eye (and cleaned, of course).

Sorry, yes I was taking the older cleaning into consideration, other wise it would be a 50/53.

A good number of people care, not all Capped Bust half dollars have been cleaned, and even among those that have, many look better than that one.

A potential seller always says the coin is genuine and uncleaned, and the potential buyer always says it been cleaned and points out other faults. It all depends on how you look at coins here, either as a buyer or as a seller on this or any other coin forum. There was a thread here which discussed this coin collector/dealer/seller human dynamic behavior in the recent past.

Unfortunately, the only (Bust) coins I can afford are the inexpensive cleaned ones, maybe like this example. One which could go either way. When I get it home and remove it from the slab or flip I'll make the determination if it's infact been cleaned or not. Easy as that. I'll also assign the coin a grade and add it to my BLUE COLLAR BUST HALF DOLLAR COLLECTION (where each coin was purchased for $100 or less), quite a job too.

As far as a Top Three TPG Certified Uncleaned MS+ coin, HAHAHAHA... You won't see me or most of the the other Bust Coinage collectors here drop anything over $3000-$5000 for a coin and a hearty HELL-NO when a Bust Coin has a $90,000 price tag attached. If that's how you make your living it's gotta be hard to turn something like that but the profit margin has gotta be large.

But ya' gotta understand many of us Bust Coin collectors are pure collectors and aren't that concerned about the grade a coin receives from a TPG or an IHOP for that matter...

I do understand, and nowhere in my previous posts did I mention "grade". I was talking about cleaning, which I suspect is quite heavy on the coin in this thread. and it apparently bothers me a lot more than it does you.

I do believe, however, that people should collect whatever they like, though I hope they are informed and have their eyes wide open.

I have just started to study these, so my opinion is that of a begginer, but I have seen much better for the price already......there is zero luster, none, on that coin, it looks dull and unattractive.

If your after details? That coin has them, otherwise...........

    Mark,

I lumped Grade and Cleaning into the same (faults) category. In many cases determining if a coin has been cleaned is similar to determining a grade. I should have been clearer...

However, we've both seen coins which were purchased as low grade/cleaned examples only to seen them for sale later as TPG graded VF/EF/AU/even MS no problem coins.

Grading and Cleaning are both subjective factors in determining the VALUE/Grade of a coin. For they both go hand-in-hand.

I don't think anyone was suggesting he try to find an uncleaned example. The above coin is lacking any sort of life. A nice cleaned example can be had for the same amount or less and will be a much nicer coin to look at regardless of your tastes or means. All my bust halfs are cleaned, but still retain a nice gun metal blue appearance, not a dull, flat grey. No need to assume appearance and budget are grouped into the same category, because thats rarely the case.

I respect that. There should be a home for every coin. Just because a coin has problems that prevent it from being slabbed by one of the top two TPGs should not mean it does not have a place in a collection somewhere. If a collector is happy with a coin he bought knowing it has been cleaned that is fine with me. This is an inexpensive way to obtain high-grade examples of genuine coins, especially for a variety collector.

When the collector (or his estate) tries to sell these body bag candidate coins there will probably be a buyer for these genuine coins at a price less than similar problem-free coins. Some variety collectors are more interested in simply acquiring numerous examples of the different varieties than only a few expensive slabbed (or slabable) examples.

Me personally - I like the coin and I think it is worth $125. Yes - it looks a little dull on the reverse, but I do not think it detracts from the coin. The only reason I would not buy it is because I have decided I need to keep all of them under $100 dollars(wonder who gave me that idea) from now on. :) I will post my new 1825 CBH tomorrow - and what I liked the best was the seller said cleaned in the auction. I think that kept the price way down.

i'd pass and look for one with a better color. its a nice looking coin though, but for $125 you could find one with better coloring.
