This is my first time posting anything about coins. But I love looking at them..lol. I need help identifying the type of doubling in the letters "IN GOD WE TRUST. I hope the picture is good enough as I took about 50 of them to find one that shows the doubling. Thanks.

    It's known as worthless doubling.

looks like the coin was dipped in some kind of cleaner.

That's a new one to me. I have read through a lot of forums in the few years that I have been looking at coins and I have never heard of that type of doubling. Thanks for the info.

I cannot see the doubling, try using a macro setting on the camera, allows you to take pictures closer to the coin surface.

Could you please specify what type of cleaner you think it might be. I just got this in my change from the local gas station.

I think he is trying to say it is machine doubling - which is likely and not worth anything. Even if the doubling is not MD, it's so minor that there would not be any added value with the condition.

That's the answer I was looking for. Thank you. I wasn't concerned about the value...I was trying to figure out what type of doubling it was. Thanks again for the help.

There are many types of doubling, most of which are worth nothing above the face value of the coin. I see more damage than I see in doubling on your coin.

If the doubling is flat and shelf like it is MD. Also it usually is displayed in only one direction.
The other type of common doubling you will find on Nickels is DDD.
Die deterioration doubling. This will usually be found on both sides of the devices. Nickel is extremely hard to strike and deforms the dies much quicker than other metals.

Welcome to CT. The error is nickle, it is spelled nickel. Just pointing that out as many people misspell it the way you did.
I would also like to let you know that it is always helpful to include well focused, cropped and properly orientated pictures of the obverse, reverse and close ups of any areas you have questions about. The forum can then give you better answers to your questions.

Thanks for pointing that out about the spelling...I seem to always spell that one wrong. And I thought I had the pictures orientated in a way you could see what I was talking about. I could see it anyway...again sorry about the spelling of nickle...lol

Yes the doubling is shelf like and all on one side if the letters. Thanks for the information.
