If Dan does it, they'll only have tones that don't exist in nature.

Wherever there is a fad booming, you can always count on our Chinese "brothers and sisters" to help us fill it.

It is fascinating to read some of the opinions here! This Jefferson toned coin that started this thread is mine and I'm still pleased to own it! I would agree the toning is AT and I also am certain many coins now rejected by the PCGS and NGC used to be graded and slabbed. PCGS and NGC cannot distinguish between NT vs AT which is why many toned coins that are natural don't get the designation that is deserved. Keep the opinions coming since this is how we will continue to learn and learning is precisely what this toned nickel is all about .

I cannot believe I read this entire thread this morning. Too bad the Mods, cannot delete all the OT stuff.

Clawcoins, posted: "FYI, you can take out a coin, reinsert it (after gassing) and close it. Just don't use a hammer .. you do have to be much more precise and careful."

    BS ALERT!!!

1916D10C, posted: "I don’t care who you are, I don’t care if you are the owner of NGC, and I don’t care who you know either. It does not change the fact that you come off as a pompous, rude, officious, and narcissistic individual and by your own admission in previous posts, are proud of your poor attitude and behavior, using your age and expertise to pass off inappropriate remarks. I don’t know a fraction of your knowledge about coins, but I do possess a greater degree of tact in my dealings with others, something YOU should attempt to learn. Maybe you would command more respect and come off as less of a cranky, angry old man who hates the younger generation. Attack somebody’s age and I speak up. I don’t appreciate it and when I ran a numismatic website six years ago, I did not tolerate that garbage either."

It is just Kurt being curt. Get used to it.

Yes, I had all my tact surgically removed long ago, and it was an elective surgery at that. I had to pay cash up front, and it was worth every penny.

I suppose this thread has petered out pretty much however it is important to note that this coin isn't gassed as assumed by most of those who made a hypothesis as to what caused the color change. I also have been accused of fraud concerning those USNAF holders that I have. My sales were shut down on eBay simply because Sheldon Overton Baby accused the slabs I have of being a scam yet never produced any evidence to support the claim. I realize there are many smart and far more experienced collector's here than myself yet I am not seeing the truth about my collection be made known. It is somewhat interesting that NGC accepted the gassing explanation and warned others not to buy it on the information about this nickel on their website as if they should ever tell someone what to buy!! I'm all for learning and sure wish we can get the truth out there.

If it wasn't gassed then what made it change while in your possession? Inquiring minds want to know.

This exactly! A coin doesn’t go from blast white in a holder to double sided toning in less than a month without assistance.

If anything USNAF just helped confirm that the USNAF slabs were also tampered with.

I frankly don't give a RIP how you did it, the fact is you did it and it is at a minimum unethical and may be illegal. I'd keep my metaphorical and legal head down if I were you, pal. Just some advice.

Your appearing here is tantamount to bragging you murdered a missing 7-year-old girl and mocking the police for getting the murder weapon wrong. You need to make yourself VERY scarce, creep.

@USNAFguy - sounds like we are on the same page here then.. How/Where was that coin stored while it toned so dramatically? Would you mind divulging that information ??

I did become entangled in a very unproductive argument with my accuser in regards to those USNAF holders and I won't be engaging anyone in any more unproductive personal attacks. I will only say as to what I do being considered "unethical" that is a very slippery slope! Everything going on in coin grading currently is by my measure considered unethical. I play by rules and I know what manner of man I am and sleep well at night but when I step into an arena where rules and ethics are not being used by anyone I will certainly adjust my strategy to adapt to that type of warfare. I will not be saying how the coin was toned yet. I believe more is actually being accomplished by letting supposed "experts" render their educated guesses. I know for certain curiosity moves and motivates people and so I must wait to say what I know. We are not done learning together. I do appreciate everyone's opinions! Thanks

Why would the mods remove this information? What is wrong with sharing this information? It is with purpose that we all share and help each other learn!

Not sure I did read it? If you look back I have set back and waited awhile to chime in on this thread for a reason. Things didn't go well when I fought for what I for what I considered right when it came to those USNAF slabs. Hopefully I learned my lesson and won't allowing silly accusations to cause me to be aggressive in my communication in the future (fingers crossed)! If this is thread is continued long enough I believe the truth will be exposed and I am optimistic it will. Let's keep our hobby safe! Best wishes everyone

There's a few on the bay that look so so. The only eye opener was the toning on the reverse was exactly the same on the obverse. Let me find them...

At what point do Chinese counterfeit coins collapse the whole rare coin market? To avoid counterfeit coins or AT coins the individual collector is responsible for gaining the knowledge to avoid making a mistake in what they purchase. If you can't distinguish AT from NT don't buy toned coins! Just my humble opinion.
