Hi, Shrews. I spend a lot of time on war-era coins and different metal types. I can say with a great deal of certainty that it simply does not look like a type 2, 35% silver piece.
Just like these should be silver war nickels based on the year, but they do not look like what worn silver nickels should look like...because they're fake. Then there are high grade war nickels, which don't have the same look as when they are worn. In fact, it becomes a bit more difficult to tell silver from non silver without checking the reverse. For example, which one below do you think is silver, the top or bottom?
1942 actually has two types for that year. Type1 (75% copper and 25% nickel), and type 2 (35% silver and other metals). One of those above is silver and the other is not. And because they both weigh 5.0 grams, you can't simply weigh them to tell the difference.
I never could figure out what type of "tissue" to use either. So kleenex type of tissue is the correct kind?
Any kind will work as long as it's single ply. If it's two ply, pull them apart and use one of them. This was the first hack I learned when I started collecting.
Well the bottom one looks different cause the dull appearance. So I say the bottom one has the silver.
I put a tissue over my phone but i still couldn’t tell which one was the silver one. Haha I vote top because the bottom looks silver.
Yes I know. But the war nickels are more common for it and how the nickel looked had me asking about it.
Nice!! I like it!! I still have not found a war nickel. I’m almost ready to buy one if I don’t find one soon!! Shrews1994 did you find your crh..? I need to find one. I’m itching for one.....
Mike, war nickels are all over eBay...at reasonable prices and with reasonable shipping. I have probably over a hundred. Just be sure and shop around. Don't bid on the first ones you see. I look for lots with low price-per-coin pricing and free shipping. JCro57, I have a few. None slabbed. I'd like to get at least one of each year he made them. I find the back story on those amazing...or ridiculous....depending on which way you look at it. I mean, if you're going to counterfeit something, why counterfeit nickels??? Maybe to avoid drawing attention? I've read that he made them in 6 different years with 1 of the years being only a "maybe he did, maybe he didn't". Except for the war year nickels, it's difficult to tell a Henning from any others. The war years have no mint marks over the dome. I've heard that the others may have a "hole" in the leg of the R in the reverse motto, and dots or dimples in the Ms on the reverse. Also I've read that he dumped thousands of them in a creek when the authorities got close. Supposedly people with metal locators are still finding them there.
