What would be a good auction estimate on this?

My daughter's are 5 and 3. They are a bit young to understand value and are more fascinated by colors and rainbow coins. Their faces light up with joy each time I pull something out for them to look at.

That is nice to hear! Hopefully they'll grow up liking coins!

The 5 y/o enjoys them and is the youngest member of the club I attend. She loves the door prizes. Lol

Excellent photos are key to getting strong money for toned coins.

Sorry, but I don’t think that coin is worth anywhere close to $500. I’d rather pass it on to the kids as you suggested, instead of playing the crossover game and hoping for a better grade.

I like the 1878 much better. Can you post a picture of the reverse?

Both of us might not value it at $500, but if there is a standing offer of $1,000 then it’s worth that much to at least one person.

My initial thought was $500, then I saw the ANACS slab and thought it would need to crossover to NGC or PCGS to go that high. If it crosses to either at the MS65 level, I don't think $500 is out of sight, and certainly not moon money. The $1K offer I would have taken in a heartbeat if I was the owner of this coin.

    AGREED,

If this coin were photographed by jtlee and then reposted for a valuation, I bet everyone would be in the $500-$1000 range.

Someone who doesn’t mind fingerprints. I do mind them and that’s why I won’t be an interested buyer.

It's NFS so no need to be interested in buying.

    +1

I wouldn't have thought twice about selling for $1k, and this is coming from someone who held out for moon money for his monster toned Morgans.

My father gave it to me and he has stage 4 cancer. Selling is out of the question. He has moon money coins though. That is terrible that your father is sick and his coins are amazing, but you entitled the thread "What would be a good auction estimate on this?" After that title, we are naturally going to assume that the coin is for sale.

I'm just curious what the market is at right now.

If you have no intention of selling, why do you care what the market is?

Because it's my coin and I can ask. Why the hostility?

Hostility? It just seems strange to me to worry about market values for things that I am not planing to buy or sell.

If someone actually offered you $1k without you giving them a sales pitch, jump on it and don't look back.

Also, you don't need a "pro camera" to produce salable-level coin images. Just look at what some of the more capable guys here use. Great stuff and in some cases produced with equipment that in total costs less than some new macro lenses alone would. Others get very good results with inexpensive P&S cameras or in some cases even using their cellphones. A camera is a tool and as with any tool is most useful in the hands of someone genuinely knowing how to use and/or make the most of it.

It’s just a different “collector” mindset.

Every so often I’ll peruse eBay for similar coins as mine to understand the potential current value.

As a collector (and not dealer nor seller) it’s always intriguing to know. That’s how I found out the chaotic congrats ASEs last year and then I sold them becz it was stupid money. You never know.

So OP isn’t the only one who checks value with no intention of selling. It’s just a different mindset.
