Any new coins coming out that I should be paying attention to?

I always like to buy coins around this time of year. They make great presents for myself and others. With gold/silver prices where they are, I'd like to buy a little extra this year. Are you guys aware of any that are expected to have a low mintage or might be extra popular in coming years?

For example, I really like this set, but it seems pricey to me:
United States Mint Limited Edition 2018 Silver Proof Set

Are there any others that really caught your interest?

It is pricey, always has been. Some years it has a coin very difficult to get by itself. Not so this year.

If you have the ability to wait until 2019, the usual pattern is that new commemoratives are released early in a calendar year. I get the frosted uncirculated, rather than the proofs, of those. Lower mintages. The 2019 moon landing issues will be VERY popular.

But... keep an eye peeled for the 2018 American Innovation dollar, sure to be overlooked by many. Still coming, this late.

Thank you. I'm glad I wasn't the only one surprised by the price on the 2018 proof set. Even the 5 ounce silver coin didn't seem to be such a bad deal, but the proof set seemed high compared to years past given how low silver prices are right now. I will definitely keep an eye on the ones you mentioned.

DH used to work at NASA, so we have a soft spot for anything related to space.

I’m about to bust awaiting to Apollo commems. I too believe they will hold a lasting interest among the coin loving community.

A lasting interest maybe, but because of that possibly also a higher than normal mintage making them another common coin that will eventually fall below issue price. (And frankly I hope the coins look better than the artists renditions, Ugh.)

Valid point, but hubby loves space stuff, so we'll probably still buy a couple of those. I noticed that the 2016 silver proof set which I think I bought in November or December initially had a high mintage, but they cancelled the production of them early so the prices went up quite a bit. Do you think there are any coming available next month that might fall into a similar category or is completely random?

I can't believe I'm even asking. I'm supposed to be selling my coins for this move, but I can't resist collecting at least a few things. I've just got to find a place to store them. :)

Go take your problem up with 1999. Remember the extra Susies that year?

I’ll get some sort of Apollo coin simply because I loved the space missions as a youngster. Having said that, I assume it will be a featured item at a garage sale after I’m long gone.

I don’t think American innovators will even go at a yard sale. Maybe we can dump those on the lawn of the Capitol.

In relation to the Apollo anniversary, I’m sure the Franklin Mint and other private manufacturers will be churning out a ton of junk. Be sure and ignore that stuff and buy the US Mint products.

I'm going "all in" on the American Innovators series, PARTICULARLY this first one. Anything that "everybody dislikes" is EXACTLY what I double down on. It has always worked for me. The desire to have complete sets always wins in the last chapter.

I like your thinking and I think this may be true in lots of cases, I’m not sure if this will be the same. No mintage or household limit. Depending on the price, lots of people might try what you’re trying. Plus these are coming out just in time to be Christmas presents, meaning a bunch of these will get stashed in closets not to be found for many years. Price pending, I might pick up a few.

I snagged about a half dozen proof 1999 Susies. When everybody threw a hissy fit around 1995/96 about the excesses of the modern commems, I doubled down then, too. So I now own many tougher dates purchased at OIP as my prize.

If collectors are screaming and talk about quitting, that's when I buy extra.

I'll be buying EVERY version of the 2018 AI coin that I can, in multiples.

Besides, the idea for this series came from MY working group at the October 2016 Mint Forum in Philadelphia, so there's a little pride of authorship (group) working here.

Well, one of seven or eight co-conspirators, I suppose.

BTW, the December 14 date for rolls, bags, and proof singles is now confirmed. Nine days away, dust off your VISA cards. I'm in for one Philly roll, two Denver rolls, and 5 proof singles. That is unless they offer a Kennedy-esque mixed bag of P and D. Then I'd opt for that.

By the way, if the Mint does as we suggested, the ATB quarter series will END and we'll go to the Washington Crossing the Delaware default quarter reverse after the Tuskegee Airmen ATB.

Secretary "Munchkin" only has 26 days left to act to have a second ATB run, according to current law.
