While I don't believe the "cull you can charge more" line. However, I also think this coin is worth more than $35. Nice early CC Morgan.
Do you plan on trying to sell it? or is it just to add to your collection? If it is to add to your collection the only thing that matters is what you think. If you bought it, then obviously it was worth the $35 to you. I would cherish it for what you bought and why you bought it, and not worry what others think. One of my favorites coins is a damaged coin.
If you ever acquire any 1855 to 1873 S mint quarters with problems, regardless of grade, I'll gladly take them off your hands for 5x melt. In fact, for 1859, 1860, 1861, 1864, 1865, 1867, 1871, and 1872-S I'll even pay 10x melt. Problem coins may not have value to you, but some have value in the market. You may not be willing to pay $35 for a coin like this, but there are many collectors who will buy all the CC Morgans they can find in this condition for $35, so you can't really say that the OP overpaid and got ripped off. Based on the market, the price he paid was more than fair. Jwitten once bought a holed Charlotte mint quarter eagle for under $200 and resold it for over $700 (and this isn't a unique story). So yes, certain problem coins do have value.
Every cc coin in every condition flies off the shelves in Reno and Las Vegas to tourists who want souvenirs. The dealer may have been speaking about that individual coin in that particular place. I doubt that anyone would make a blanket statement that they could get more for cull coins than normal coins. Severely damaged common coins with historically important provenance routinely bring more than pristine examples. Without that provenance they are unwanted junk. Coin collectors are not the only purchasers of coins.
Thanks everyone , I have some Morgan's but no cc they have a lot but this for 35:00 look good enough to give shot after all that was said I will wait and pay the price for a good grade
You did okay for $35. Generally, you want to save up a little more money and buy a problem free example. When it comes time to sell, a problem free, original, attractive VG will be easier to sell than a coin with VF details. However, if you’re buying a very rare coin, buying a problem coin at a heavy discount can in some cases be okay. If a coin has few known examples and there is strong demand for it, a problem coin will still have value. This is, however, just my opinion.
First of all I will never aquired any of the above specimen you listed that are problem, cull damaged coins! If you or other's wish to collect or try, and flip such items that's your business. I'm sure dealing in such items will not establish a trust in others to respect your judgement. If you wish to settle for culls ,or damage coin again thats your business! I Don't and won't. The op asked a question which I gave a truthful reply..... as others have to their opions. Opions and advice are cheap.... I've never made any claims in this thread or any other on this forum ,or any other as an so called "expert" I given my best answers as to what I've learned well over 4 times the years on this earth as you. I was collecting coins long before your were a smile on your daddy's face! You're 15, and yes you may have some knowlege of which you speak.....but you're far from the knowlege and experience of the business world. And for sure you are not an expert! Over the 50 + years in this hobby I can assure you yes there's money to be made...and also lost! You have no experence of the coin market as to gains and losses over the last 50 years. And like any business adventure there's always a chance of success as well failure.
What I said in this thread is simply my opinion. I understand the amount of time I have spent in coins is not very long compared to most of the others in this thread, but from the knowledge that I do have, as well as what I have seen coins sell for, I have formed my own opinion on the matter. I don't think that it's necessarily true, nor do I think that I am an expert, I am just trying to contribute to the thread. I do not fully agree with your opinion on problem coins, but I do fully respect it.
It may be the cheapest, but also the worst CC Morgan condition I've ever seen. There may be worse out there somewhere, but I don't want to see them...Spark
Just did some research...NGC lists the OP coin at G4/97.50. It has been suggested earlier in this thread that it may be an AG03= maybe $75 worn but undamaged. Agree that $35 is not a bad price for damaged but readable legends on a '78 CC Morgan. But, I would have given this a pass as soon as I saw it...Spark
