All I can say is...wow. This is completely unexpected. Of course I will accept and will do my best to pay it forward. As it stands right now, I am working on paying it forward by making some mixed coin bags for my son's cub scout den. I am teaching the coin collecting badge the first week of December. I am making little bags for each of the boys (11 of them!) with a mix of a few world coins, older US coins (wheat cents and buffalo nickels), and 1 ancient each. I have some uncleaned ancients I have been working to get cleaned up to be good enough to be identified and given to them. Hopefully it will stoke an interest in coins...hopefully focusing on ancients I've said it before but I think it bears repeating...The members of this forum are absolutely amazing. You are all so generous. Not just with your coins but more importantly, your knowledge. You have taught both my son and I so much. I look forward to learning more and helping out and contributing more in the future.
very noble of you @Orfew, i do , however, think you're prejudice against us olde tyme collectors who aint got one yet.....
I consider it great news that the rule change allows those who participate here by reading and thinking without causing a deluge of meaningless posts intended to qualify for giveaways. We need a way to tell who there is out there that would actually appreciate such coins as more than potential eBay stock.
Word of mouth is usually a good method. The Private Message section of CoinTalk is probably as active as the public boards.
I like the idea of having members here recommend someone and the winner drawn from those recommendations. Just a thought.
Wow, that's an awesome give away...very cool @Orfew ! I'm still HYPED about that awesome denarius orfew gave to me last year!! Congrats to @furryfrog02 !
Hey @Cheech9712, I was chosen for this coin but if you are interested in ancients, send me a PM and I can send you a couple of mine to get you started
A little happiness came to FFIVN on his sick day home from school. A package from @Orfew with the Elephant Denarius in it. As we do with all new coins, we read a bit of history about Julius Caesar and the reason the coin was minted. My son's favorite part was of Caesar possibly using the elephant imagery to mock Pompey and his inability to march into Rome on a chariot pulled by elephants. He thought that was a pretty good way to make fun of him. Much thanks to @Orfew again for this generous gift. It will have an honored place in our collection. And now without further ado, my poor attempt at photography.
I would be interested in seeing a post in a month listing ffivn's ten favorite coins with a short reason why that coin made the list and another coin did not. Of what you have shown, many of us would consider the elephant an obvious winner. We could accept a father/son coop list as long as you point out where one of you differed with the other.
I think that is a great idea. I will see what we can work on. I know our favorites differ for sure. He likes a lot of the coins more for the imagery and stories behind the rulers on those coins. I of course enjoy that too, but I also am more interested in the coins themselves, how they were minted, where they were minted, etc... Should make for an interesting thread
