Hello everyone I've only been collecting for about a year, and I'll post my collection at some point. Although I've been reading Coin Talk for years, I've only just joined this forum. I'm looking for a fairly tidy Julius Caesar, and I just wondered if anyone can shed light on this posthumous one. Does it look ok or a bit dodgy? Any help most appreciated.
Darren, welcome to the "active" side of CT! Your active participation is appreciated! (I, like you, followed CT for a long time before joining.) Although I regularly peruse the ancients forum, I do not have the expertise to answer your question, however, many others will.
Hi Darren, Welcome to CoinTalk . Can you tell us the weight and diameter of your coin? At the cracks does it look like toned silver or might there be bronze underneath? I thought it might be a fourree but maybe it's just the pictures making it look like there is a bronze core.
Hmm... does it match these modern dies by Slavey? The dotted border on the reverse doesn't match but the the bull and legend overlay perfectly. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pos=3
Always glad to have another fan of ancient coins on board! In regards to your post, for ease of viewing please post as full image when sharing (it helps us get a better look). And any other details you have on the coin, Ie size, weight, where it came from, etc, really make it easier to answer. That said, I have reservations. The coin looks "mushy" to my amateur eye. And that you question it makes it questionable. I would pass my new CT pal.
The fabric looks mighty convincing but the dies match to known fakes. Maybe it was struck over an authentic denarius. From FAC's Fakes gallery: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?album=search&cat=0&pos=0
Cool thanks for all the reference links and images. Much appreciated. I think too something is fishy, so I shall indeed pass! Cheers Darren
Oh, I didn't read the OP carefully. I thought you had already bought the coin, Darren. If it were real and if it were a good deal, posting it on a public forum is a good way to ensure that someone else would snatch it while you waited for advice.
That’s ok! It finally went for £160 or so. A bargain for someone if real. I do hope it is for their sake and they grabbed a nice deal. But after reading the advice here, I just didn’t feel comfortable enough, so I’m ok with missing out on this one. I’ll wait it out till I find something I feel a bit more sure about! Cheers guys Darren
I'll reiterate that my newb opinion isn't worth much, but that coin is junk. Equivocating "weak strike" justifications (from swindlers) aside, the perfect beaded edge plus the "worn" higher-relief elements are basically impossible with genuine coins that actually circulated. Those edge beads would have been preferentially worn-down if it was real and actually had jingled around for a few decades.
