Caesar Voconius - real of fake?

Discussion in 'Ancient Coins' started by Darren Strange, Nov 17, 2018.

  1. Hello everyone

I've only been collecting for about a year, and I'll post my collection at some point. Although I've been reading Coin Talk for years, I've only just joined this forum.

I'm looking for a fairly tidy Julius Caesar, and I just wondered if anyone can shed light on this posthumous one. Does it look ok or a bit dodgy?

    Any help most appreciated.

Darren, welcome to the "active" side of CT! Your active participation is appreciated! (I, like you, followed CT for a long time before joining.)

Although I regularly peruse the ancients forum, I do not have the expertise to answer your question, however, many others will.

    Hi Darren,

    Welcome to CoinTalk :).

Can you tell us the weight and diameter of your coin?

At the cracks does it look like toned silver or might there be bronze underneath? I thought it might be a fourree but maybe it's just the pictures making it look like there is a bronze core.

In regards to your post, for ease of viewing please post as full image when sharing (it helps us get a better look). And any other details you have on the coin, Ie size, weight, where it came from, etc, really make it easier to answer.
That said, I have reservations. The coin looks "mushy" to my amateur eye. And that you question it makes it questionable.
I would pass my new CT pal.

I'll add another vote to pass - I can't explain why but it looks fishy to me.

There are about a dozen in the fake reports on FORUM ANCIENT COINS

A real one but very worn. This is not the same variety as the OP coin but close.

I think too something is fishy, so I shall indeed pass!

    Cheers

  12. These are usually quite expensive too aren’t they?

Correct. Anything under $500 is a rare score...one that I haven't found yet either...

Oh, I didn't read the OP carefully. I thought you had already bought the coin, Darren.

If it were real and if it were a good deal, posting it on a public forum is a good way to ensure that someone else would snatch it while you waited for advice.

  15. That’s ok! It finally went for £160 or so.

A bargain for someone if real. I do hope it is for their sake and they grabbed a nice deal.

But after reading the advice here, I just didn’t feel comfortable enough, so I’m ok with missing out on this one. I’ll wait it out till I find something I feel a bit more sure about!

    Cheers guys

    Darren

Just to be clear, it is not ancient. It is a fake.

I'll reiterate that my newb opinion isn't worth much, but that coin is junk. Equivocating "weak strike" justifications (from swindlers) aside, the perfect beaded edge plus the "worn" higher-relief elements are basically impossible with genuine coins that actually circulated. Those edge beads would have been preferentially worn-down if it was real and actually had jingled around for a few decades.

I would bet 10K that it is FAKE.
