1982 D Copper small date???

I found this coin while searching rolls from a bank. It's obviously worn and it looks like the 2 is over a 3. It weighs as copper should. 3.0. Any thoughts.

???? I DON'T think so but the 2 is definitely unlike the other large dates I've compared it to.

 

Most definitely a large date variety, as it is a rather common find for the year. This is an example of a small date variety out of the Denver Mint;



Of course mine is a high mintage zinc, just one of several found in my endless searching of rolls from several locations around my hometown in North Florida. I always keep an easily affordable digital scale in my kit to weigh 1982 D cents and any and all subsequent year and mintage specimens that appear to have characteristics of being struck on that ever elusive stray copper planchet. As of yet I have found a total of zero and do not expect to ever find one, still I check when the thickness (usually caused from the strike with the rim being raised and causing the planchet to appear thicker though it has just displaced more metal along the edges) and tone just stands out like a copper coin. Really the ring says it all, but on a coin with the potential for a higher grade you don't really take the idea of just dropping a specimen so nonchalantly!!

I am a lowly beginner only having a little more than a year of field experience and study of specific desirable die varieties and vital information regarding their identification; but my opinion is that you should never relent on your search for those rarest of specimens. Those who find them are usually going to be those who continually dedicate the time and effort in doing so. If you fail in the quest; which is to seek, so too shall you find absolutely nothing.

The counterfeit statement had nothing to do with you coin. Your Cent is real.

That is one of those experimental two thirds cents that the mint was toying around with making back around the time of the switch from copper to zinc

 

Considering it is a large date and 1983 hubs and dies didn't even exist at the time this coin was struck.......
