Can anyone tell me if this is a mint error? And if so what kind it would be? I do apologize for the poor picture, but as a newbie I haven’t acquired all the knowledge or high-tech gadgets.

    Looks like lamination error.

I’ve heard of that. But not very often. Collectible or common?

Looks like a retained lamination chunk that came off, swung to the left as if on a door hinge, and then was struck by the dies. (notice the "E" in "CENT" has part of the design showing; it couldn't if the lamination came off after strike.). I am pretty sure that damage was there before strike on a "defective planchet caused by lamination."

Not a 1955 doubled die by far... but any value?

Post both sides. And hit "full image" when posting photos

In that year the government says the copper came from old 'fired' munition shells, which were most likely not well cleaned, so contaminants can cause laminations due to nonsimilar material. I have seen more from that era than most years. IMO. Jim

I disagree. The piece was struck first then it was move to the side. The E is facing the other way.

I agree. It was struck first.

Screenshot_2018-09-02-06-24-10~2.png Then why is the vertical part of the E still showing over the crater? Wouldn't you see the reverse image of that vertical line on the underside of that chunk? Where the indent pattern of the letter should be after coming off does not match up, and the raised form of the letter is over top of the crater. How can that be?

If the flap was folded over before the strike you would see the C in Cent struck on it.. You don't. Laminations are mysterious.

I have seen plenty of Laminations where the letters or numerals show struck within the crater after it loses it flap or fold. I can't explain it.

I see your point on that.

But how the raised vertical base of the E shows over the divot still seems to not explain it.

Now that makes sense. One matches up with the other. Notice you can see the incused face of Lincoln. You don't have that on the OP's specimen.

Edit: Actually, I changed the sharpness and lighting. The chunk actually does match up and has incused areas matching the raised areas inside the divot. I was wrong at first. Everything makes sense now

It would be better if you start your own unique threads with your coins. Better views and more responses that way..
Keep the title short and ask all the questions you want on the 1st post of your thread.
