I saw a graded dime on ebay, and it said MS68 FSB. What does FSB stand for? And is this good for 4.50?
FSB means "Full Split Bands". That shows that the bands that hold those sticks together are fully struck, and separated from one another. In other words, that dime is very well struck which makes it a beauty!!
If those pictures are from the auction you can not tell if the coins is truly FSB. I personally stay away from auctions with pictures like that - no way to tell how close ANI was to a true grade.
Prices for the 1946FSB Dime at MS67 are i believe are in the range of $ 100's. But this is for PCGS/NGC... http://www.pcgs.com/prices/frame.chtml?type=date&filename=roosevelt_dime The 68's are sky high!
FSB= Full Split Bands. It also means that the seller has no clue, and the TPG'ers (the slabbers) are idiots. FSB is used exclusively for Mercury dimes, and refer to the center bands on the reverse. Roosies are referred to as FT (or full torch) but I don't think (not sure) that any reputable TPG'ers currently use that designation, but I am sure that someone will correct me if I am wrong. It is just that I have heard the discussion, but have never seen it yet. Okay, I take it back, PCGS uses FB-- what ever that means.
There are only two things on that slab that mean anything : "1946" and "10c". One can ALMOST count on them getting that much right . Here are the things which mean nothing in this case : MS, 68, FSB, and "guaranteed authentic". Use your own skills to grade the coin. Treat it as one treats a raw coin. This "certification" is meaningless.
Ryan, look at each set of bands. Is there an unbroken line running all the way through? That's what they're trying to say. The designation FSB is all wrong for that series of dime. But then again they're just a grading company, so what can they be expected to know? Another thing, $4.50 isn't bad for a MS68 several thousand dollar coin, huh? I'm just sayin'...
Looks like it might have been cleaned too. I'd stay away from ANI, unless the pics are very clear, and you know how to grade for yourself. For $4.50 though, I'd say go for it. Phoenix
